Re: rifles
A friend today gave me a Charter Arms AR-7 Explorer. I always wanted one of those. I am going to shoot it this weekend and then it goes into the BOB.

"BOB"? You sound like a member of the USN forum.

Re: rifles
What is the USN board? Not Navy I hope - I was Army!
One day I came up on a car wreck and went to work on the victims. I did not have a fire extinguisher and one lady was jammed in and unconcious and when the fire department arriverd they had to cut up her vehicle with big hydraulic tools to get her out.. If her vehicle had caught fire I would not have been able to do anything but watch. Just the idea gives me the willies to contemplate.
I had no first aid kit - there was major trauma with bones sticking out and all, I improvised and did OK, but a trauma kit would have been much better. No blood pathogen clean up kit - I went home with blood from two stranger's all over me. No rubber gloves. Nothing in my trunk but a spare. Hell even my jack was missing.
So I put together a road side emergency kit to keep in the trunk if I ever run across another situation, including a fire extinguisher and a compact 20 ton floor jack that will pick my car up way high with no strain at all. I could not find a commercial trauma kit like I wanted, so I put my own together - this is not a bandaid and splinter removal kit, this is a major wound trauma kit. The little stuff can wait or take care of itself.
That led me to put in some emergency water, later on some road flares and folding reflective cones, later still an extra change of clothes, one day I added some compact life raft rations that I came across, and here and there a few other odds and ends. Over time it has kind of grown on its own as I come across something that I think might be handy to have. I don't expect big bad things to happen, but it is comforting to know that I have a few necessities along with me as I don't want to be caught empty handed like that again. It is a bad feeling to be in an emergency and need something to work with and not have it.
But it all fits in a canvas bag about a third the size of a military duffle bag and takes up no room to speak of. My rule is that it has to go in the bag (not the jack or extinguisher), if I can't get it in the bag I take something less useful out to make room. This little .22 rifle disassembles and fits into it's own stock, it is designed to be carried tucked away for emergency use. So, since I have it, I might as well tuck it away for emergency use - it certainly would not be my rifle of choice for hunting so tucking it away won't hurt anything.
So far I haven't needed it at all, but my wife did one day recently when she came up on a motorcycle wreck and was able to help the victim with the stuff I had stored in the trunk. So all for the good.
Anyway, back to the topic - I always wanted one of these since I was a kid. I will take it out and shoot it this weekend, make sure it works nice and smooth.

i had one of those ar7's long ago. fun gun and very unique indeed. but mine jammed allot. could never figure out why.
that's why i recently got that kel-tech sub 2000, guess i like guns that fold up/break down..
manu doesn't understand the American mindset of shooting, and tolerance of others ideas of what they want to shoot at.
BOB = bug out bag, right? Thats survivalist type talk.

Bug out bag, yep. Possibles bag is an older way of saying it. I would guess that most people into home distilling are probably survivalists in some fashion and to some degree. I also work on my own car, which is getting to be mighty rare these days. If you raise a garden, you are a survivalist, no?
I read about the jamming problem, is was a common problem for the Charter Arms AR-7. One fellow said it is an easy fix. Take a .30 cal bullet and put a mild abrasive paste on it, insert into the chamber and slowly spin it around by hand. This will creat a bit of a chamfer at the chamber opening. He said to take it in small steps and test fire frequently as it is best not to overdo it. Apparently as the bullet comes up and out of the magazine it tends to catch on the sharp edge at the chamber and chamfering the chamber rim relieves that. According to him his never jammed again after that.
I haven't tried it yet, but I haven't test fired it yet either.

Re: rifles
buddy came by with a new M1-A "SOCOM II" from Springfield the other day. A very nice but very expensive rifle.
If only the best birds sang, the woods would be silent.
Re: rifles
All my shooting is for IPSC competition in pistol, rifle and shotgun. My favorite rifle is a sporterized .303 no4. It has a slick bolt action, 10-round mags, and very accurate with ghost ring sights. Shotgun is a Mossgerg bolt action, topped with a red dot sight and with the barrel shortened and full choked. Pistol is a standard Para-Ord 9mm semi auto suitably tweaked for speed and accuracy. Reliability is paramount, I am considering a Remmington 7600 in 308 but the mags are very expensive and not so reliable as the 303.
Gun laws here prohibit amongst other things; semi-auto rifles, pump-action shotguns, and pistols over 9mm cal. If I could choose freely it would be a military style rifle in .308, a pump action shotgun, and a .45 cal pistol - stictly for the pursuit of a sport that recognises power, speed and accuracy.

Re: rifles
I've been shooting and hunting with guns over 40 years. My favorite all around caliber is 30-06. It's done everything that I've asked it to do and done it well. If it doesn't, I have a bolt action Remington .300 H&H. I also hunt with an open sight 6" barrel S&W .44 and have killed deer and boar with it. I use a S&W Model 59 9mm with multiple 15 shot clips for defense as well as a Walther's PPS .380 for a pocket gun. I plink around with a .22 S&W revolver, (killed a 44" rattlesnake with it a couple of years ago). I goose and Turkey hunt with a Browning Gold in 3 1/2" Magnum. I have a SKS with a custom stock that is a lot of fun to shoot and surprisingly accurate. I have several others of different caliber and makes that mostly gather dust, nothing fancy or that's worth very much, but they are mine that I have accumulated over the years. Most dear is my great grandfather's single barrel shotgun that would probably fall apart if anyone ever shot it. It was probably a Sears and Roebuck $5.00 gun but its my heritage and it means something to me.
Re: rifles
Amen. I have two .22 rifles, one was a 10th birthday present to my Dad in 1933, and the other belonged to my Mom when she was in her teens. They would be the first things I saved, if saving things was in order. Most dear is my great grandfather's single barrel shotgun that would probably fall apart if anyone ever shot it. Yep. I sometimes think what I would do if my house caught on fire and I couldn't save it. I would get my family out first, next my dog and then that old gun. Anything else can be replaced.

Re: rifles
We can't use a rifle for hunting in the lower have of Michigan. So I'd have to say my two favorite "rifles" our my 12 gauge slug gun and my .54 BP. I say slug gun, because the rifle barrel you can't shoot shot out of it. I do have a couple .22's , a sks, a mak 90 aka Ak -47 only semi- auto version. Pistols I have a Firestar .45 ACP and a taurus .44 mag with a 6 inch proted barrel.

Re: rifles
My favorite big game hunting rifle is a Ruger Mk2 in 30-06 with a Leupold 3-9x. Deer season starts the Monday after Thanksgiving here. We usually sight in on Thanksgiving morning. Looking forward to that.
I have a crappy old Lakefield .22. Bought it with paper route money almost 20 years ago. It's ugly and rusty. The stock is beat up. But it's accurate and squirrel hunting wouldn't be the same with another gun.

Re: rifles
Picked up a new Marlin XL7 bolt repeater in 30.06 today, it was the last one in our local gun shop. Got it at a good price mounted with leupold rifleman rings and 3-9x42 Nikko Gold Crown Scope. Because our Aussie dollar is dropping rapidly, the price on imported rifles will increase 30-50% from the 1st of Dec.
I also scored a box of Federal Power Shok 150 grainers in the deal.

Re: rifles
I had a 300 Winchester Mag but when the local government decided that maybe there should be a gun registry and made it mandatory for all gun owners to register their guns I sold her. Kept only my double barrel 12 gauge and my 303. Seriously you can drop a 303 in a puddle and dry it off with sand and she'll still shoot straight and not jam! Mind you shooting straight is the problem not the gun....will have to cut the shine down a lil more!

I've had a bolt action 308 Savage 99L for the last 45 years and it's still my favorite. Picked up a Mossberg 500 Chainsaw a few months ago and that's the easiest firing pistol grip I've ever shot. My wife likes it, probably because she's so small she makes it look like a cannon.

I'm a dyed-in-the-wool .308 guy. I generally like bolt-action rifles (Browning A-bolt or Remmy 700) but also have an M1A. Lately I've gone the other direction and have been having a bit of fun with the .17 HMR - it's like a lead laser. -P

I have a Remington slide action in 30-06 that I love. When I hunted way back when I could work the action as fast as any semi-auto. It is an extremely accurate rifle with the right handload. However, my favorite rifle is definitely my Garand.

Couple of years ago at the Elk Foundation I won the last item on the last raffle table.
Savage model 200 in a .243 syn.
I being a life long Remington fan would have never bought that brand - that gun - or that caliber.
Have known lots of guys who love the .243 but I have always bee a 30.06, .270 or 7mm Mag guy.
After adjusting the trigger - when I got it you needed a 12 pound hammer to make it go bang -
that is the tack drivingest gun I have ever owned!
Most of the shots we get at deer on the ranch are 300 yds minimum and many out to 500 plus
She has never let me down
I however have let her down several times - Lord I hate getting older and shakier

All my rifles except my Ruger 10-22 and 2 of my .50 cal BP rifles (an ancient Hawkens, and a modern stainless Winchester) have been gathering dust for years.
I find that my 10-22 is my go-to weapon of choice. It takes care of most anything i need. The 2 .50 cal BP rifles are for hunting (BP season or not) and the Hawkens also is for play... it goes on EVERY range trip.
