Final product proof
Hey guys
Been searching all over, but either am not phrasing my search criteria correctly, or looking for sausage
in a dog pound. I have a final product with SG of 0.88. How do I calculate the alcohol %? This product
is 4th run, tastes pretty good, and easily flattens lesser mortals .....

Re: Final product proof
Don't know the calculation for it. Sounds like you need to pick up a 'Proof and Trailes' hydrometer though. A beer and wine version just don't cut it after it's been through the still.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

11% seen a calculator somewhere maybe on a beer site?
Re: Final product proof
4th run and only 11% Need something other than an internal reflux!

Final product, guys. Burns with a pale blue flame, almost no residue/water .....
Re: Final product proof
I don't think so.Dnderhead wrote:11% seen a calculator somewhere maybe on a beer site?
SG water 1.00
SG of mystery mix 0.88
SG of 95% 0.79
So,
.88-.79 = .09
1.00-.88 = .12
.09/.12 = .75 * .95 (95%ABV is .79 SG) == .7125
So .88 SG is about 71% ABV if the mix is straight ethanol and straight water, i.e. output from a still, and if the SG reading of the .88 stuff was done close to 20 degree C.

yep my goof for got the the one
Re: Final product proof
No problem DH. He is obviously using the wrong tool for testing the end product, but IF (but if) his product is actually .88 SG at about 20C, then the AVB can be determined (within a couple % ABV)
Using a proper alcoholmeter would give a more accurate result (especially, since most of them have a pretty long thin tube, allowing for a pretty accurate end reading). But the ratio computation "can" be done, if you can get an accurate enough reading of the specific gravity.

Re: Final product proof
I have the same ABV table in the form of an Excel spreadsheet, but I have absolutely no idea how to attach it to a post! Any advice?
Re: Final product proof
This seems like a good thread to somewhat hijack with a question of my own. For those of you that potstill UJSM by doing a stripping run than saving up low wines and then doing a spirit run, what is a typical final abv for the finished spirit? I did one batch that way when I first started then started using a thumper. With my recent refinements on my thumper I'm curious how my final abv compares. I got 70% abv from my last run.

I strip and do a second run, my ujsm sits on 81 % for the most part, the entire body of hearts comes across at 80-81% before dropping fairly steadily down to around 68% odd where i switch to small jars as the taste starts to change.Hack wrote:This seems like a good thread to somewhat hijack with a question of my own. maybe 72%, maybe 65%, but somewhere round there as the still dictates per batch.
My strips start around 65% and finnish at 20%.

Unfortunately, I don't have abigger one.
Re: Final product proof
Can you go back to photobucket(or wherever you have it stored0 and enlarge it by 25% or so?. Or we can save it and do the same.

Nice work.
When I first read the request to enlarge it, I didn't really think it would matter.
I assumed that there really wasn't more resolution than what was displayed,
But It looks pretty good.
Re: Final product proof
It depends on which head I use on the pot. My gooseneck heads start out just over 80% usually avg around 72% for the middle cut. My hybrid head starts higher and my middle cuts avg 80-85% or so. I get a lot longer transitions with gooseneck head which cuts more into my hearts/middles. So, I collect less middle at lower abv and end up with more feints. But, the flavor is great and the cuts are easier to make. The hybrid head makes cuts harder in some ways because it tends to strip more of the impurities out along the way. What are obvious smells and tastes of heads or tails..become quite faint and harder to detect just on either side of the middle. It's quite easy using that head to add one to many collection jars, that appear to smell/taste fine, back in only to pick up a gak in the back of your throat and/or a burn. But, the best sourmash I've achieved yet has been with that head. It was very smooth, had a dry, sourcorn flavor that was pronounced (think tangy), with just a hint of sweetness to it.punkin wrote:I strip and do a second run, my ujsm sits on 81 % for the most part, the entire body of hearts comes across at 80-81% before dropping fairly steadily down to around 68% odd where i switch to small jars as the taste starts to change.Hack wrote:This seems like a good thread to somewhat hijack with a question of my own. It's also kind of subjective question since it depends on where and how deep you do your cuts. That would have a bearing as well on what your final blended abv would be. If you tend to start your cut deep in the clean middle with a hint of tails, you are going to have a lower blended abv than someone who prefers the taste of an earlier cut.
Re: Final product proof
Thanks Usge and punkin. From what both of you say it sounds like the 70% abv I'm getting from my thumper after cuts is similar to what you both are getting by double distilling. Now the question is am I getting similar flavor? That of course will be difficult to answer. I'll probably have to break down and double run some to compare to my thumpified hooch.
