Do Coffee Filters Add Off-Flavor or is it just me?

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Do Coffee Filters Add Off-Flavor or is it just me?

Post by Pervy Sage »

I don't like the taste that coffee filters introduce - it tastes like paper. it was even worse when I tried filtering through paper towels.

So, am I just using the wrong coffee filters or what?

I don't like the taste either, but switchin' to unbleached coffee filters helped ALOT.

Rinse them with some dilute citric acid solution first- that's what you have to do with the filter pads in the big plate and frame filters to get rid of the cardboard taste.

Interesting, I've never really noticed a taste, but just by chance I was using unbleached filters anyway.

If you squeeze one of them before tossing it, I have noticed it just puts back in what you just strained out and can/could also introduce some weired paper flavors. I put mine in a SS funnel. Malita filters. (cone shaped). Change them often. And when you remove them, don't squeeze them. Just pull them and toss them (I usually run them under water first to just neutralize any possiblity of a fire hazzard).

I like that...cardboard taste...that's it

didn't think I'd ever consider using 'em again, but if I ever need to i'll try running the weak citric acid solution through them first, and will try unbleached filters

Thanks!

Have not had any problem with unbleached filters.
Be safe.
Be discreet.
And have fun.
