Diesel mech's on here?

Been reading the "what's your 9 to 5" thread and seems like there are a few diesel mechanic's on here.
Besides myself (diesel mechanic in the army 25 years now) how many others are mechanic's or diesel mechanic's?

Is there a correlation to mechanical knowledge and shining???

I'm not a certified mechanic of any kind, but diesel engines are the life blood of any farm, I haven't seen one I couldn't fix whether it be truck, tractor or bulldozer. One of my all time favourites is the 3 cyl Perkins out of MF series tractors (MF 35, 135 etc). I'm rebuilding one right now, just waiting for the injection pump to come back from the rebuilders. They run way past their rated MTBF specs and are elegantly simple . The one I hate most is the Cummins in the 3/4 Dodge truck... I curse it every time it needs a wrench, it's like the engineer went out of the way to make it hard to work on. The Detroit stationary for the genset is a much better engine, but I realize all these companies make different engines, some better some worse. The hardest worker we have resides in a Ford 450 Super Duty with the 7.3 , It does duty as a small dump truck (5 ton no problem) and pushes a ten foot plow to clear the parking lots at the businesses we run 400K on it

Last year I bought one of those Changfa stationary diesel engines.... what a piece of crap. I sold it within in a month and replaced it with a 35hp Kohler running on methanol and ethanol.

Well, they called it 'mechanic' in the army. Rebuilt my first auto trans at 14.(727 torque-flight) More into gas engines myself, drove truck for 18 years after military and can't stand the smell of diesel anymore. Currently re-working a 460ci Ford and C6 for my 4x4 and a 500+hp small block to go in my 65 Chevelle.

In 1984 I worked in Perkins at Peterbourgh UK, used to run a machine that macfhined the crank, Cam , Idler gear, and the trust recess, could produce 24 blocks in 1 hour, Set all my own tool cutter bars to 1 thou of an inch and done a 1 in 5 quality & size / tolerance checks, in my time at Perkins I worked all the machine operations on the 3 cylinder blocks, even stamped the No's on them, (if ya get a bad block I must have been on holiday )

My Brother in law has just retired from Perkins after 44 years makeing the Crankshafts for the 3 cylinder engine.

Not a diesel mechanic myself, though my hobby is diesel performance. Do most all of my own wrenching on my truck. It is a 94 3/4 ton dodge cummins (hey hey UGLY ). My stock motor put out 160/400 at the flywheel, and I have modified it up to a modest 320hp/800tq at the rear wheels. Though I am having some problems with the motor at the moment, my setup should be making more like 400/900...

The motor is great but the dodge part stinks.

Anyone have any questions or anything PM or say so in the thread, I am on multiple diesel forums that dont mind new faces around and as I said, its a big hobby of mine-

I know nothing about diesle engines beyond changing the filters and oil.
But I got a perkins diesle 6 cylinder in my fishing boat--steel-hull-38ft'er--18tons. Thats a great little motor!! 2-hours per gallon at 9.8 knots.

My '93 has almost 400K miles. Its never needed any engine work. My '03 dually is not such a great motor, its cost a lot already. Bad injectors.... losing bearings... The 12 valve cummins are great tho...

Not a diesel mechanic but I've owned two diesel engines in my time. The first was a 1960 Mercedes Benz 4 cly car and the other was a David Brown 950 farm tractor. Both of 'em were tough as nails and neither of 'em ever required any work by me. Either I was very lucky or they were both excellent examples of what was built in the 60's.

Funny you say that. My first truck was a '90 reg cab long bed 2wd dually, with Cummins under the hood. When I sold it, it had 220k on the clock, and was still great.

I wish I still had that, as my newer ('94) dodge cummins is giving me many problems

Trained in the Coast Guard in 1971 and been turning wrenches ever since. Work now for Cat dealer in Tennessee.Work out of road truck and do on site repairs.

A guy I know has an early 90's Dodge with the Cummins turbo diesel. He bought it new and it's got over 740k on it. He's done no major work on it and it's still going strong.

Not certified, but just did the timing belt, tensioner, lower roller, water pump on my wife's Jetta TDI. I own a Duramax and service and work on both all the time.

not a mechanic but I do my wrenching on a 91 Mark2 Jetta with a 1.6L diesel. It's got well over 500,000Km on it an still runs fine.

Well I am a Mech at the local chevy dealer and I was a diesel Mech in the Army for 6 years. Its nice to see another 63B around here

20 Years as a Construction Mechanic in the Navy Seabees. Been retired 25 years now, still playing with Diesels. 07 Chev K2500 with 6.6 Duramax. Several Diesel tractors around and I still have my Detroit Diesel rebuild tools. Enjoy making likker but I gave up drinking it 32 years ago.
