Post by manu de hanoi »

I'm purchasin a number of tri clamp ferrules and the O ring offered by the supplier are made of "EPT rubber":
- How bad is it ?
- Have you seen better alternatives ?
- What's yours made of ?

Thanks

I was using a home made copper washer, but it needed annealing too often and most times leaked after three runs.
I've just recently cut a washer out of 4mm balsa wood, soaked it in water and fixed it into position and clamped down tight.
It formed itself into the same shape as the rubber ring and has been great so far.
Two stripping runs and two spirit runs.
The balsa plank measured 100mm x 1000mm x 4mm and cost 6 bucks.

When I purchased mine a couple of month’s back I told the guy that the seals would need to withstand Ethanol, methanol and acetone , he mentioned they can supply the seals in 3 different material (rubber, Viton and silicon) he checked his catalogs and supplied Silicon seals.

I use PTFE gaskets from St Patrick's of Texas. They have a silicone version that's tri-clamp x sanke. Wish they had that in PTFE, too.

the white PTFE ones work great. For the connection to the keg, the silicone ones are easier to shave flat on one side.

When I bought mine they came as a complete unit, the 2 sides, clamp and seal, you just had to pick the type of seal you wanted, may as well get the right one from the start and be done with it I recon

i work with vacuum systems a fair bit at work for cryogenic systems. for ultra high vacuum systems, we use the anealed copper gaskets since rubber types tend to outgas (read: evaporate / boil off) under such low pressures.

for my still i use balsa, works great for me.
