You Can buy a half barrel for $50, oak cubes are usually $10 a packet, for the cost of five packets you can get oak for years with a half or full barrel.

I always wondered if the red wine stain inside would taint the whiskey flavour, or do you just cut that section off?

I seem to remember reading about a scotch whiskey which is aged in red wine barrels... seriously expensive.....

from the reading I've done, people say that it adds a better flavour to it and mellows it out more when you have the red wine stain on the oak still.

That's all I ever us, shifty. Staves work well. I just give the outside a bit of a planing to remove the accumulated dirt and gunk from the cellar.
