Least amount of low wines for spirit run with a 1/2 keg?

Post by booger68 »

Hi all another couple of questions for ya.

What is the smallest amount of low wines i can use for a spirit run?

I have about 3 1/2 gallons of low wines that i have stripped i will be cutting it down to 40 abv tommoro but this is a slow going with only 2 6gallon fermentors?

I have done 2 strip runs now and i have removed the forshots On both but i still have them (about 2 quarts worth).

Should i dump them back in when i do my spirit and remove the forshots there or should i leave them out and start right off collecting?

Thanks

most remove for shots on both stripping run and spirits run. 2 quarts seem like a lot of fore shots from 12 gallons of wash.
you can run as little as you want with external heat but if internal elements you need to keep them covered.

Thanks Dnderhead,

Sorry i must have wrote it down wrong.I have done 2 stripruns of 2 6gallon fermentors which would be 24 gallons.I will try to fix my post so as not to confuse folks that look at it later on.

I am glad i dont have to wait for ten gallons of of low wines i may try to do a spirit run monday then as i am running propane.Any tips, tricks or advice would be appreciated?

I do have my scabbed together parrot to help me.

Not real good on the little bit i have tasted of my strip runs they kinda are segrated out in quart jars so there is some degree of separation but hopefully running it slow will work out some of the bite that is there.I am running the ujssm

thanks for all of your help

I think I took out too much foreshots myself. My collected keeper jug is only 40%. I was putting the jars of Foreshots into my feints jug because most were too harsh tasting. Dnunder told me that it all has a rough bite when it is green. I will not throw so much into the feints on my next runs. Just to give you a leg up on something I have learned, Oak at 60-65%. ( Too much
% abv high tannins =bitter) I agree with your thoughts on the green stuff being too harsh. Goose eye told me If I was in a hurry to get it mello to run up to the likker store. I am not in a hurry but would like to make some really good stuff to make me feel better about all of the reading and money spent thus far. :esurprised:

100 to 150ml per 5 gallons of wash is more than enough foreshots.
If you are not sure on cuts, collect a pint at a time. Cover the jars with coffee filters, paper towels or cotton cloth for a day or two before making your final cuts.
It is the very things that we think we know, that keep us from learning what we should know.

Thanks folks for all the advice,

I will probably do a spirit run next week, so i will be reading my ass off and takin notes.

Krook, looks like you are comming along real well and asking all the right questions.I may need to copy off of your paper so dont cover it up!!!!

Hawke, thanks for the collecting in small containers i guess i will need to get me some pint jars now that they are on sale. That may be the ticket there. To bad there are not any folks around here that could come show me and train me that is how i learn best.Well hopefully i will not pick up any bad habits and think i am doing something right when i am doing it wrong.

I reeeeaaaalllllyyyyy appreciate your help!!!!!!!
