hey all... I've been posting here for a while under a different name, but it is now changed to Scribber... reason: well, I wasn't that bright when I first joined up... didn't think I would actually be posting much, so I just used my last name as my login... recently I I got anxious when I read some of my old posts... there was a ton of evidence there and having used my last name seemed to give too much easy evidence for potential litigation... thus the name change... I'd tell yah what my old name was but that would kind of defeat the purpose of changing my user name eh?
TO THE POINT:
Seen a lot of talk about fermenters and such. one thing I guess we are looking for are pails made with HDPE, which as I understand it is HighDensityPolyEthylene or something like that.....
I just saw a nice big garbage pail that is freely available, but I looked at the bottom and it aint HDPE... it would be nice to have, but I'm not sure if it is safe... the label is LDPE which i ASSUME means LOWdensitypolyethylene....
am I correct in assuming that it is the HIGH density which makes the polyethylene useful for our purposes and that a LOW density will leach out chemicals/poisons? or would it be okay to use this?
dunno where else to find plastic garbage pails that are HDPE...
keeping my eyes open for one of those big blue pickle barrels!!!
Scribbler.

HDPE is best. Stick with that and you won't go wrong.

Re: New name, new question: HDPE
If your in Canada (eh?) go to Canadian tire, that's where I got my 121L HDPE garbage can (with wheels).
I also seen them in Kents, home depot, etc.
The only issue I've come across...121L of liquid is way too heavy to move or lift. So you have to lay the keg on it's side to start the siphon. Next batch I think I'll put it on my work bench or at least a foot or so off the floor to make it easier to siphon from.
edit--121L is 26.5 imp gallons which is 199.88lb's!
If you add corn etc you are probably talking 200-210lb's....don't try to move the plastic can when full!

Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!
