It seems like one of the most asked questions is about "My wash is not foaming or bubbling" Help Me! I wish you real experienced folks would tell us if it is suppose to start when we pitch yeast, 10 minutes later, next day or what? Also maybe tell us what yeast to use (like Brewers or Bakers). (does brewer's yeast also add nutrients?) Maybe even "reinterate" the temperature to pitch it. ( I see 6 different answers on here for that.) Do we stir it immediately after pitching? Do we put air lock on immediately & leave it alone ..or do we stir it daily for the first few days. I have seen all of these answers. I thought maybe one of you wonderful master distillers could try to make it more simple for us numbnuts. Read? Yes, I read. I read things like "don't use nutrients for grain washes". I read "Use nutrients for all washes" . I hardly ever read how much nutrients. We (me anyway) are dumber than you think. We love you guys so much........ :oops:

not all washes "foam" that depends on what is in them ,, surface tension,starches, viscosity ,o2 etc.**
"brewers" yeast wont do a thing, but add nutrients, (it is cooked yeast off the bottom of a fermenter)
it should start working (bubbling) in 24 hours .maybe sooner.depending on yeast,nutrients, temperature, etc ( if it has not started in 24 check it out)
pitch yeast 70-80F (21-27c) do not stir*. (can be pitched lower but will be slow,, can be pitched higher but mite kill the yeast)
grain does not need nutrients, other washes very.
*stir/shake/ somehow aerate before pitching yeast*
**like blowing bubbles in milk compared to water**

Well, I feel like the dummy that I am. I thought Brewer's yeast was something you bought(embarrased)

I have,, did it do any good? .I do not thank so, maybe even hurt, the yeast will fiend its own home.
brewing sites say do not stir.just spread it out on top.

Many people confuse 'brewer's' yeast with 'distiller's' yeast. So don't be embarassed.

I have used baker's, saf-ale, ec-1118 and distiller's. I usually sprinkle on top of the wash at around 80*F, wait about 10 minutes,(until it all looks wetted) then stir and seal. Have had some kick-off within an hour, but I don't worry, unless it's been close to 24 hours.

I made a creamed corn mash & distilled it (strip run) & knocked it over & spilled every damn drop !
I am making grape wine for distilling into brandy in another 2 weeks
I am running a sugar wash (w/ tomato paste for nutrient) tomorrow...a strip run...(hate neutral spirits) but need to learn..I am soooo new
I just started a ferment tonight with liquid barley malt & sugar to try to get a somewhat whisky taste.
Use a pot still... I love true smooth corn likker, but gotta learn how to make neutral first. Maybe I can mix my neutral with some blue raspberry kool-aid or something.

plenty of good uses for neutrals. make some panty droppers for the ladies, some schnapps, or use it as vodka. kahlua, gin, etc. lots of choices.
