testing alcohol percentage

i have been making wine for a couple years now and have never tried distilling till tonight and i think i have the basics down but i went to put some of what i have distilled into a test jar to test with my hydrometer for alcohol content and the hydrometer isnt floating at all it sinks to bottom. am i using the wrong device to test what i have distilled.
