What is a fifth of Spirit

I am not from the US and know it is a bottle of spirit , but how many cc's

I am a roo

and know how much 3/5 of F--- all is , not very much

I am making the following recipe

Making Homemade Liqueurs
Crème de Cacao
(Made with cocoa)

Creme De Cocoa Recipe

1½ cups sugar
¾ cup water
1 fifth vodka
½ cup Dutch processed cocoa
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Combine sugar and water in a heavy saucepan. Bring to boil over medium heat. Reduce heat and simmer until sugar has completely dissolved, about 3 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool to room temperature.

Mix the cocoa with a little of the vodka to dissolve the powder. Gradually add a little more vodka, mixing as you add. Combine dissolved cocoa, remaining vodka, sugar syrup, and vanilla extract in a large jar or bottle. Cover tightly and shake well to mix. Let steep for 2 weeks, shaking container daily. Then let steep undisturbed for 1 month.

When steeping period is complete, most of the chocolate will have settled to the bottom. Slowly pour off the liquid being careful not to disturb the chocolate which has settled. Discard the chocolate on bottom.

Pour into bottles and cap tightly. Let age at least 1 week before serving. The liqueur should be shaken slightly before using.

I was always told that 1/5 of a gallon is a fifth. A US thing. But because we are SO international now (all grown up now and can play well with others) we are moving more towards them foreign liters, kilo and thangs. (and I think the likker people can cheat us out of a few ounces here and there)

Strange I can't put my hands on a real old timey fifth bottle at the moment. They are all METRIC now!!!

So mostly packaged in 750 ml or liter bottles now. Around here its liters and not litres, OK? Don't confuse me!

1 US gallon is 3785.412 ml.
divided by 5 = 757.08 ml.

most stuff over hear is 700 ml to the bottle , so near enough is good enough

don't forget a gallon down here is 4.54 litres ( the way it should be spelt )

I'm spelting it as best I can. Yes, we have a different, proper, gallon. And 4.54 litres/liters/lirets/lisets is just too damn much to drink at one time! That's why it is supposed to be 3.785 LITERS per gaffom. OK?

Like the above said, a fifth = 1/5th gallon = 4/5ths quart, for the bums who were just short of enough to buy a quart. In the early '60's I worked in a market / glorified liquor store near the beach and had all types of customers. Gallo and Italian Swiss Colony wine was in quarts & pints, but also sold in fifths &'tenths', being tenths of a gallon, a little less than a pint, for the winos, 99 cents plus 4% tax (back then!). A dollar plus 3 pennys out of the 'lil cup on the counter.

Peck=2 gallon (dry),,,,4 peck= 1 bushel used both in US and Imperial

Spelt & spelled are correct. The -ed ending is more common in American English, I believe.

I bottle all of my UJSSM in used JB bottles which are 700ml, if anyone scrounges a bottle from me they are only getting 700ml, which means I don't have to give a lot away. I know I am a tight arse but I like drinking it myself.

As fester showed with the math, the US 1/5th and a 750ml are close enough in volume that most recipes will not know the difference between the 2 measures. I think a 5th is just a tiny touch bigger than a 750, but not enough to matter (about 1/2 a shot bigger IIRC).

NOTE, I have not seen a fifth for a while, except in liquor stores with OLD stock on the shelves. I did find a 1/5'th of old grandad about 4 years ago out in panhandle Nebraska at a dusty old liquor store. The stamp on it was '72 or '78(I really dont remember which, but I do remember 70's and an even year). There were 3 price tags on the thing, and I still only paid $18 for the bottle (well worth it). The original crusty price tag was $9.50, so paying double for a bottle shelved for that long was not a bad deal. Sure tasted fine, going down in the cabin on a trout stream. Now, knowing what I know about online crap, I coulda probably sold it for $40-$60 as an 'antique' bottle on ebay, but at the time, I simply thought it a great deal to drink around the campfire, eatin s'mores and hobo pies.
