Hello and Need Advice on Purchasing A Still

Post by Pamulli »

Well this is my first post and my first day doing research before jumping in so I thought I'd start by asking the most basic of questions...What Still to get? I have been asked by my Mother-in-law to find a still for my father-in-law as a Christmas gift, but I have absolutely no experience with this and am hoping I can get some help on this board. Since she is footing the bill and Christmas is close, building isn't an option. From what I've gathered a pot still is probably the best option since he wants to make Bourbon/Single Malt Scotch style whiskey, but I'd love to know if I'm wrong about that?
I have been looking at stills from Brewhaus as well as http://encode.com/exec/npage2.htm but I don't know how good these are. The Brewhaus stills seem to be all SS, which I thought wasn't good? I've also looked at the page of available commercial stills, and the all copper ones are a little out of the budget.
If anyone has any advice or suggestions on a specific still, I'd love to hear it. I'd also be interested in knowing what else I need to get for him to be able to hit the ground running.

Thanks,
Paul

The PDA-1 from amphora society is a solid unit from one of the few manufacturers that truly understands this sport. It can be detuned somewhat (take out packing) for whiskey runs. This is a liquid management style very similar to what people call a Bokabob Still (do a search on site). Also there is a gentleman by the name of Manu that makes a really nice s.s. combo - again he will have some posts on here somewhere.
