Strip/Spirit run quantitys
Ok I have been doing strip runs on UJSSM and now I have a solid 3.5 gallons to do a Spirit run and was wondering,
Would the amount that I colect during a Spirt run be the same as the strip run of the same size?
I mean now I have a lot more of good product from all those Strip runs. So when I run it for the Spirit run wouldn't I get more hearts?? Then again it will be substantially stronger ABV so maybe not!!

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
All decisions made for a spirit run will be decided by taste, collect in small jars, leave to air for 24 hours, and then decide which are heads/hearts/tails then the quantities will be apparent.

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
Thanks OldDog,
That's what I do even on the striping runs cause its what I use to collect with. I strip 4.5-5 gallons at a time and collect Fore Shots in a 100 ml. jar, then 250 ml. for heads, then I have 10 300 ml. jars I fill up and on the occasional run I get another 400 ml. or more if I want to really get a lot out of the run, but the end wont even light on fire. My concern was that I would not have enough small jars to collect in. I am really anxious to do this spirit run of the UJSSM I have been running.

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
There is only a need to discard the forshots on a stripping run, then just collect everything down to 20ABV, there is no need to make cuts.
When doing a spirit run, discard forshots again, then collect in small jars, and make your decision regards blending the next day when the spirit has had time to air. When you have made you final selection, put the heads and tails into a container to be added to your next run. when you consider the heads and tails contain alcohol with a greater ABV than your next wash, it will enable you to capture more useable spirit if added to your next run.

IMO there isn't even a 'need' to remove foreshots when stripping.h Some prefer too, but it's not nessesary as long as you make good cuts at some point in your process. Afterall, foreshots are just the strongest part of heads right? My understanding is that the only reason we talk about them in isolation of heads is to make sure the most concentrated heads are not recycled so we don't get a build up of heads in later batches... Right?
Three sheets to the wind!

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
I don't remove anything during a low wines run, just take the lot down to 20% abv. You get better separation during the slower spirit run, so I do all the cuts then.
Be safe.
Be discreet.
And have fun.

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
As far as I can tell that is exactly right kiwi. I used to only throw 50ml from my rum runs and recycle the feints through the next batch in the thumper. I eventually ended up with 2l of heads and 5L of tails with 4L of hearts.kiwistiller wrote:IMO there isn't even a 'need' to remove foreshots when stripping.h Some prefer too, but it's not nessesary as long as you make good cuts at some point in your process. I ran all the feints though the reflux, and got over 500ml of the nastiest foreshots I have ever smelt. Major actetone, etc etc.. Threw the lot away but still got 3L of hearts from that run...
Now I always throw away 150 ml and don't recycle into the next run.. I save them up for a neutrals run..

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
The only reason I collect in the smaller jars is because that is what I have to collect in. I mean I preatty much have the smell/spoon thing fairly good on the UJSSM first run because of the way I have to collect. If I had a 1 gallon jug I would just collect all(except for forshots) in that....but I don't..sure would like to get one soon though. Ill find out in a couple days what doing a slow spirit run is like.

Yah I am a bit of a swim away from Aussie. I got a home brew shop I can go to and they sell 1 gallon glass jugs for 6 bucks or so. Ill be hitten them up soon!! I am going to start collecting Low Wines on a UJSSM batch at 50% backset per 5 gall. mash.
Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
Be careful with those Reject shop jars Olddog. I thought they were great, but the other day i was closing the sliding door to my booze cupboard and I hadn't slid the jar far enough back into the cupboard and door caught the corner of the Jar. I big chunk came out and before I could do anything I had 4 L of 3 month old UJSM on my laundry floor. The flat sections are nice and thick, but the corners are about as thick as a wine glass.olddog wrote: by olddog » Wed Jan 13, 2010 1:48 pm

Re: Strip/Spirit run quantitys
Well I got a gallon of 150+ Proof and could've ran'er longer but was in to tails and it was late. Most definitely a different set of skills needed on the Spirit run than the Strip run...Well in a round about way!!!
