Re: Expensive booze
I'm surprised that the wine that was once owned by Thomas Jefferson is not worth more.
Re: Expensive booze
Very interesting! Making the bottle out of gold or glueing on diamonds is cheating, it's just a fancy container that money can buy anytime.
The genuine old stuff in ordinary bottles is something else, a time capsule plus the longest ageing around. I would pay to get pissed on a bottle if I could afford it, but they should go to someone who can describe the taste properly so we can all benefit from the experience.

Re: Expensive booze
would bet t jefferson wine is vineagar.
Re: Expensive booze
Kinda what I was thinking there, Goose. If you paid that much money for a bottle, you probably wouldn't be game to open it to find out it was just swill. Very, very expensive swill.

Heck, I was pissed when I spent the $30 for Knob Creek and found out how skanky it was. Have tasted a few high end wines that I wouldn't drink if they gave it to me.

I have a bottle of 1893 Para liqueur Port in a presentation case. Maybe someday I'll get round to selling it along with the full series of the dated vintages.
Less oak longer

Once, many years ago, I got to try a glass of good quality 40 year old port.
Mmmmmmmmm. Yumyumyumyum.

my folks have a barrel of 35 year old port and a barrel of 20+ year old double still port.. the best port i have tasted.. and you haven't tasted sherry until you have tasted 30+ year old (its as dark as port, thick and rich)
also for those who want to have a gander at some whiskey that has been barreled since the 40's go to the cigar shop in crown casino Melbourne (a bottle goes for the tens of thousands)

Re: Expensive booze
About a year ago I heard on the radio, about a scotch tasting and offering that was happening in Calgary Alberta. I don't remember the name of the distillery, but what they had was 2 casks of 70 year old single malt. It was being offered for $25,000 per bottle.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat all day and drink beer.

Re: Expensive booze
True story.. my wife, when she was born, her parents bought a then expensive bottle of red wine.
At our wedding party, they brought it out for us to open and drink.
The year.. was the year of my birth. And I checked later.. that bottle was worth something in excess of $1k
It was really good

Re: Expensive booze
you guys will be horrified with this, but back in the day when i was about 14 or 15, my mate and i would sneak bottles from his parents port collection..
anyway, one day we found a bottle that was dated in the late 1800s, went to open it, the cork broke in half, we had a swig each... and tipped the whole bottle out.
Only now, after being able to appreciate the taste of a drink and not the drunken stupor it produces do i feel very ashamed of myself..
i think we must have drank two dozen bottles of port that were atleast 60 years old.

Re: Expensive booze
I was talking to a mate over the weekend and he told me that Bundaberg black rum is now bringing around $1500 a bottle. We used to drink it after working on his aircraft and it's all gone. BUGGER!!!
A bottle of that would have paid for my dogs vet bill after being bitten by a snake last week. BUGGER again.

Re: Expensive booze
Then there was the time a few years ago, we were staying in a seaside house with friends.
We opened a bottle of 1972 Penfolds Grange Hermitage and drank it with the pizza; beautiful.
(For those who don't know, it is pretty much Australia's top wine.)

Re: Expensive booze
I haven't found a single bottle of wine that I would pay more than $5.00 for. Just not my taste. Would love to try some of the high dollar whiskey or Scotch, but somebody else would have to pay for it.

Re: Expensive booze
A good pard of mine and I both love a great Scotch. A few years back we were in Las Vegas for the NFR. While waiting for some friends to meet us we sat down at a Scotch Bar
in one of the casino's ( don't remember which one) After about 3 hours of " lets try that one and that one" the bar maid said her shift was ending and would we mind
paying our bill. "Sure be happy too" ( really happy at this point )
$ 2,400.00 Thanks God she discounted it to 1,800.00 and we left her a $300 tip
His wife learned about this ( he told her ) and she nearly divorced him
