Asking the impossible

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

Asking the impossible

Post by hilltopper »

Hi
Just finished trying out my new still with a couple of trial runs but will post that as another topic.
Told HID that I had this spirit sitting there at around 92% and the first raction was " Make some whiskey from it for when the girls come round"
Well cannot argue with SWMBO so my impossible question is......Is the any decent off the shelf spirit essence that makes drinkable whiskey without having to age , wood, or whatever..not after single malt quality etc.Just drinkable..told you it was impossible lol

know i should have used a pot still etc but guess who gave me the reflux still as a present :D

So if anybody can come up with any suggestions it would assist me in keeping my assets lol.

regards

If she's got the same palate (or lack thereof) as my other half, just pick any essence and tell her it's nice.

But his lady don't know that.

Seriously, you should be able to make a reasonable whisky (rum, etc) with most reflux stills. Exactly how depends on if you got a VM, LM or CM column.

I did pretty much the same thing. Had all this ethanol so I ordered some of the Legend Whiskey Essence and Rum essence.
It looks good but you will have to add a little bourbon or brandy to give it the right smell. It really wasnt knocking my socks off so I just added (48 hours ago) two table spoons of rasins and a tablespooon of honey to a fifth of the rum. Two days later, Wow, this is great. I have a wine glass of it in front of me right now over ice. It will definately go over well with anybody. Still lacking a good nose but with this taste, who will notice? Hope this helps.

I've found that most essences that I've tried, tasted okay if you use the purest ethanol you have. None of the essences have the same nose as the real thing but work okay in mixed drinks. A single malt scotch essence isn't what I'd have on the rocks but several of the schnapps and spiced rum ones seem okay for mixers.

Hi
Thanks for the input.
Did as suggested and just bought some essence.

Gave it to HID.
She has not spoken to me since.
Think this is a 100% result for me :D
