Direction of flow. The supply pressure should flow towards the bottom of the seat. If the pressure is the other way around it's acting on the stem and is more likely to leak through the gland packing.

Nah, TL. This is a three dimentional garden thingy. Has no practical use at all. A symbol of some sort. The arrow points toward the sky. Tons of pics on google, but nothing to explain the meaning. It just has to be there somewhere, but I'm buggered if I can find it.

seems like my grandma had a thing like that in the garden. It sat on a round base that also functioned as a sundial...

That may be all wrong... but thats what I always thought as a kid....

Lots of stuff on valves this week. I attached a cut away of a globe valve, showing why it is a directional valve. You want the pressure against the bottom of the seat not top.

That is an 'armillary' (spelling?) sphere, its a sundial. The arrow points toward Polaris (the North Star) in northern hemisphere. It points to whatever ya'll have for the southern equivilent in Oz (is that your 'Southern Cross, maybe?) -hey-

Yup, just like that but not as fancy. I reckon it's as Junkyard and Heynonny says, a sundial of some kind.

Heynonney is right. Its called an Armillary sphere.
