Car Rim Burner

Well......as promised. Here it is. I finally got to use this thing. Works great! Heats up faster and I no longer have to worry about drafts blowing my fire all over the place. Uses much less fuel as well. Runs on natural gas, which is a hell of a lot cheaper than propane cylinders. This thing took me about 2 hours to make and no money. Made it all with scrap steel. It has a 50 K BTU burner that I got from a local plumbing company out of an old water heater. This thing was well worth the time invested and it is going to save me loads of money on fuel. Let me know what you think.

Fine by me WD. Hoping maybe someone would consider the design. I wouldn't have done anything different. The only hard part was to cut the whole for the burner itself. The side wall of the rim is thicker than I expected, so I had to use a plasma cutter to get through the material. I understand that not everyone has access to a plasma cutter and I would assume you could get through it with a cutoff wheel on a grinder. It will just take you one heck of a lot longer to get through it. The plasma cutter takes about a minute ..... life saver in my opinion. I would recomend everyone use one of these bad mama jammas. Pretty happy with the performance.

Good job casper. I love mine. It's faster heating and uses a lot less gas.

You went to a lot more work than I did and I may just do some small mods on mine. I recommend this idea to all. My thanks to whoever it was that suggested it to me.

Thanks to everyone. I appreciate all the feedback. I may have spent a bit of time on it, but the same thing can be achieved by doing a lot less work. Not sure where I got this idea either, but I am sure it can be found by doing an HD search. It is by far one of the best upgrades I have considered. As I said, it should save me loads of money on fuel costs and time. Pretty easy to build too. Even if you didn't have access to a welder and plasma cutter, I suppose you could fix something up to make the car rim work for your rig. You would need a few basic power tools, but it is managable. The rim is what makes all the magic happen. Blocks all the breeze and holds in all the heat with the enclosure it provides.

For a keg boiler it's the best invent since the keg itself, congrats.

All I used was a four inch angle grinder and arc welder. She's a bloody bewdy.

My first sonsideration was the four inch angle grinder, but when I saw how thick the material was, the plasma cutter looked sooooo much more appealing. When I started, I never realised just how thick the material on those rims was. It had to have been at least half an inch thick. Pretty nice to have access to these kinds of tools! However, even if one doesn't have access to the tools, as you have said Blanik, it is still possible to get the job done without the plasma and welder I am sure. Maybe you could throw some pics up of yours to demonstrate the variations that can be considered when tackling this project.
