Rumrunners, Moonshiners and Bootleggers

hey guys, I watched "Rumrunners, Moonshiners and Bootleggers" recently; the history channel doccumentary on moonshine. Im sure most of you have seen if and if not, then you should cus its very interesting. Anyway, it got me thinking. The last part of the doccumentary talks about modern day moonshining and the law. Have any of you had large scale moonshine opperations? Have any of you who just do this on a hobby/personal use scale had any trouble with the law? And if any of you do sell your moonshine, who buys it? I was born and raised in Dallas, so maybe im just not rural enough to know the answer to these questions, but I am very curious to know the answers.

Actually it was QUITE informative. The collection of answers should tell you the following:

1. The illegality of this hobby is a well known fact
2. Much of the discussion here IS theory based
3. The internet isnt nearly as secure or anonymous as you might think
4. We dont advocate the sale of alcohol in any way that isnt legal and registered.

Take a closer look at the forums and you will see. Dont take this as a hostile response either. We are cautious, intelligent people who have 'not a little' wisdom under their belts. If you are really seeking answers to these questions, then you will seriously need to gain trust with the group. Even then, we seriously dont advocate sales. The HD group is for HOME distillers who make it for their own use and possibly friends. If you look closely, you will also see that there are a lot of people here from NZ and AUS, where it is legal to distill alcohol for personal use.
Others are here for other reasons. I wanted to give what very little knowledge I got from an old friend and I might try my hand at opening a distillery some day using local flavors and resources.

If your looking for a bunch of Hillbillies to get you started in a "romantic life of shining, running and slyness", then you are in the wrong place.
This particular art was sensationalized and capitalized upon in a way that distorted it into legend and mythology. While there may be some good stories, most of the time it was hard labor and mild paranoia.

Let me try to rephrase my question. I know this forum is mainly comprised of people who distill spirits for their own enjoyment, not to sell them, and Im sure that these types of distillers are not very high on the "revenuer's" list. But what I really want to know is if any of you have gotten in trouble with the law because of this hobby. It seems to me that im not at much risk with my small keg still, especially since I have no intention of selling anything that I make with it. Im not looking for any incriminating information here.
