Cork ideas. Is this possible?....Big problem
I kinda have a big problem. My 5 gallon stainless steel pot, through my error, now has an inch hole and 4 smaller holes as I tried to use an element to heat and it just won't seal. I saw it was leaking a little bit but as it heated up it got worse and I has to abandon the run. So I already had a hot plate in the house and tried a similar size pot but not stainless steel to see if it would work. It did so i think i am going to use the hotplate and going to abandon the heating element idea. The problem is how do i seal these holes, or is it even possible. I was thinking a cork but i dont know if it can take the heat.
Open to all suggestions, hopefully we can think of something.
Thanks snookfinken

cork will take the heat, but why did you not use a cork gaskit on the elament.

its the screw in kind. The one that attaches outside the pot and has the flange already on it. Since the pot has a curve to it, it leaks. I was thinking buying a cork sheet and making a couple gaskets and stacking them together and tightening the bolts to get a good seal. Seems plausible. Maybe doing it on the inside as long as it won't contaminate the wash.

it has a flang,ok could it be leaking around the bolts? maybe put bolts from inside out and solder the heads.a gaskit on inside whould not contamanate but i do not thank it will do much good.

Worth a shot I guess. I'm buying a cork sheet tomorrow and will take it a part and see this weekend. Wish me luck. Yea I feel like its plausible. Maybe with me giving the full whammy tightening them and the couple gaskets will stop it if not I don't know exactly what to do. Maybe a new pot, hopefully not.

+1 for putting the bolts from the inside out and soldering the heads. Next use a cork gasket on the outside. Works like a hot damn.
