Buying bulk yeast online

Post by bgrizzle »

So I have been searching for a good place to buy bulk BAKERS yeast online. I found a decent site http://www.bulkfoods.com/search_results ... amTxt=4003" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

I can buy 5 pounds of redstar active dry yeast for $17.42 or 50 pounds for $161.85

Do these seem like decent prices? Has anybody purchased from these guys before? Any other recommendations of good websites for bulk bakers yeast?
Hopefully these prices are amazing and I help a lot of people on the site save some money!

5 pounds will last you a long long time... I buy it in 2 pound bricks at Sams club and I am still on one that I bought in Feb. this year.. I keep it in the drawer of my fridge.

remember the stuff dont last forever. 5 pounds is alot, and i think thats a good deal. I pay $4-5 for a little jar of redstar. I know its only a few oz. I am a cheap bastard though. I reuse, save trub to start a new wash. A couple little packs of ec-118 go a long way with me. 8)

THe reason I started on this hunt is because I made Rad's All Bran Wash Sunday night. I think I used 2.5 bottles of 4oz jars of yeast. I made 12 gallons of wash. I was thinking that if I make this recipe quite a bit, I'm going to go through some yeast! Any suggestions...

Can always just use a little yeast and grow it into starter for wash.Keeping it going like the sourdough bread makers do.
I use a pot still.Sometimes with a thumper

I made a deal with an owner of a Turkish supermarket, bought a box (20 packs of vacuum sealed instant dry yeast of 500gr.) for 15 euro (20,25 USD)... :D
The stuff has a expiration date of 2007, but it still works great, have noticed no difference compared to new yeast...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baker's_yeast" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

"Active dry yeast is the form of yeast most commonly available to noncommercial bakers in the United States. It consists of coarse oblong granules of yeast, with live yeast cells encapsulated in a thick jacket of dry, dead cells with some growth medium. Under most conditions, active dry yeast must first be proofed or rehydrated. It can be stored at room temperature for a year, or frozen for more than a decade, which means that it has better keeping qualities than other forms, but it is generally considered more sensitive than other forms to thermal shock when actually used in recipes."

I've been buying 2 lb bricks of Red Star Active Dry Yeast at Costco for $4.00 apiece since I started, and every one has still been active when I used the last teaspoon 5-6 months after purchase. I store mine in the freezer.

I don't BUY bakers yeast at all.

Go into any supermarket that has a bakery and ask for some yeast. They will usually give you a few ounces free of charge. I put it all in the freezer and boil it when neaded to provide yeast nutrients.

I used to ferment with it but I mostly use beer and wine yeasts for that now.
