I started distilling about 2 years ago and found I cannot get a good neutral Vodka unless I distill it 3 times. I like my neutral just that.. . 'NEUTRAL' with no taste what so ever. I don't carbon filter because I don't think it's worthwhile, although sometimes I do to try it and perfect the neutrals I make, only to find that an extra distillation does a better job. I am very careful to keep the hearts 'OR' first 3 quarters of the batch im distilling away from the tails. After collecting my distillate 3 times I am very satisfied with the result. I also remove a good 250ml of the heads on each distillation as I am not greedy and rather the distillate a fine quality, and the same quality as store bought.
I have my own method of madness which is this: If I distill a batch and then sniff the left over dregs in the still to find they have a nasty odour, I will then make the decision to distill again. This goes on until I smell no more odours after my distilling. I can do this in 3 distillations and sometimes 4, but I cannot do it in any less than 3 distillations. My Vodka or neutrals are good and I am very pleased with them, what I want to know is how I can get these results in just 1 or maybe 2 distillations ? It's alot of work doing 3 distillations, although it works out far more economical than buying Vodka. I am Just wondering if anybody knows a way to do it in 1 or 2 distillations and also what sort of wash or mash they make ?
