New puzzle

Post by Thorn_veritas »

After kiwis puzzle I though I "would try this 1 on ya:

Your standing outside a room with 3 light switches on the wall you cant see into the room at all. You cant open the door until you solve it.

Which light switch turns the light on?

I will post the answer if no1 gets it in a couple of days. ( maybe ha ha jks )

It's the one that is opposite position of the other 2. (ie., if 2 are up, it's the one that is down. If 2 are down, it's the one that is up).

I know a slightly different version of that one thorn, but with three light bulbs. Here's another:

You are a cook in a remote area with no clocks or other way of keeping time other than a four minute sandglass timer and a seven minute sandglass timer - The kind you turn over, hourglass shaped. You do have a stove, however, with water in a pot already boiling. Somebody asks you for a nine-minute egg, and you know this person is a perfectionist and will be able to tell if you undercook or overcook the eggs by even a few seconds. How will you prepare it so that it is neither undercooked or overcooked?

Thorn, can you enter the room to confirm the solution, or do you have to be sure of which switch it is before going inside?

Hmmm. so you have to know the instant you open the door? if so I'm not sure my answer works, but... copy and paste for my answer: >Turn on two switches, lets say 1 and 2. Wait for a minute, turn 2 off and go in. If the bulb is on, it's 1, if the bulb is warm, it's 2, if the bulb is cold, it's 3. don't burn yourself checking, now :D <

You don't have a 3 minute timer, only a 4 and a 7.

Logically, if all the switches relate to lights in that room, it won't matter which you turn on. EACH operates one of the
THREE lights in that room.

But that is probably too logical and too simple...!

kiwi when i lived in the wild i would have looked at the sun and timed the eggs by the suns movement in the sky and done 9 minutes perfectly.
however with the luxury of these two timers and the water already boiling without having to rub two girl scouts together, i would start both timers, when the 4 minuet timer ran out i would turn it over quickly, when the 7 minute timer ran out i would put the egg in the boiling water and when the last minute of the four minute timer ran out i would run it out twice more. bon appite. over easy or sunny side up. cob

it took a second drink to see clearly
start the egg and both timers turn the 4 minute timer when it runs out turn the 7 minute timer when it runs out turn the 7 minute timer again when the 4 minute timer runs out the second time for the last minute. find a customer that likes scrambled eggs.  cob

Similar to cob.

I knew this one right off, just waited a bit. Start both timers. Flip the 4 right when it ends. Flip the 7 right when it ends. when the 4 ends the 2nd time, flip the 7 again. The 7 will have 1 min of sand built up. When the 7 runs out (well, it is 1 min, not 7), then 9 min is exactly up.

could you not,, flip both timers, fip 4min agin,, when the 7min runs out start egg, that gives you 1 min,,
fip the 4min. two more times, that gives you 8min. 8+1=9min.?
4+4=8-7=1+4+4=9

Start the 7 minute time and let it run to the end, then start the 4 minute time, but only let it run for half of the sand?

Better yet, break the 7 minute timer like a bottle, cut your customer and demand all his money, then go buy a real timer..;)
