Yeah, looks good spooky, I don't think flute owners would go back to other designs, just a great all-rounder...

Awesome and I agree Weeeee!! Must be close to cloud nine feeling you have seeing, hearing and feeling that penny whistle come to life. Congrats on a experiment well executed. Love the look of the finish on that condenser.Mr.Spooky wrote:heres whats up!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SUbCpw3bcRk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
If you don't know how to do it yourself, you don't have right to bitch, that you don't have any.

RUNNIN THE FLUTE!!
4" plate column >>>[/color] the flame that burns twice as bright only burns half as long
Re: the penny whistle experiment
im runnin the flute right now,, but i aint sure that im driving it right.... it took 1 hr. for it to heat up,, then i ran full reflux for 1 hr. but only the buttom plate bubbled the whole time. i pulled the fores,,,, then the heads.. after the heads, i put back in full reflux for 15 min. to let the plates stack again,,, again,, only the bottom plate was bubbling.
now, i turned down the deflag to about a pencil size streem,,, and im collecting hearts,,, i think .
any tips???? or does anyone see something that im not doing right ??
thanks
spooky
EDIT: my abv just took about a 5 point drop,,, so i added a little more H20 to the deflag

Re: the penny whistle experiment
That is 90 abv is that what you are showing and are you carrying flavor on top of the high abv?
Re: the penny whistle experiment
it is!!!! and the flavor is there as well. not quiet as much as with my potstill,,, but my potstill never got that high abv on a first run eigther.. im really impressed as of how much flavor is there!Azframer wrote:That is 90 abv is that what you are showing and are you carrying flavor on top of the high abv?

Re: the penny whistle experiment
ok,,, i added more reflux,,, but when i did, my takeoff went to drips. maby im not throwing enough heat to it???????rockchucker22 wrote:Awesome spooky ,sounds like you need a little more reflux during the run. I ran yesterday and found the sweet spot, all the plates stacked and bubbled while my take off was consistent. Great flavor coming through.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
i cant figure out why i couldent get my plates full in full reflux.... the deflag was doing the job,, it looked like it was raining on the top plate (4),, then on plate 3, it might have puddled up a little bit. plate 2 just stayed wet,, and plate one was doing its job.
all of the downcomer cups were full,, but i dont know how because none of the tops of the downcomers were submerged.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
i never got output in full reflux.
im using a gas burner, and once i restricted the water to the deflag,, my takeoff was 90abv for the first 1000 mls or so,, then the abv droped prety quick. the first time i did a cleaning run with diluted alco, all plates bubbled aat some point.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
i was throwing the heat to it. ALOT more than i ever did on my potstill.. it just seemed like the bottom plate would bubble better with more heat... was i wrong??

Re: the penny whistle experiment
no,, i dont have a thermo, but i have a temp gun.. i dident even bother using it though because i was just trying to get all the plates bubbling.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
How far from the floor of your plate is the down comer that sets inside the cup. maybe that is to close. I am really surprised because it did so well on your cleaning run. No worries spooky we will figure this out..
What percent to you think your wash was.? how long did you wait before you started taking off product?

Re: the penny whistle experiment
only toward the very end of the run.... Then they will dry up some.
Re: the penny whistle experiment
the downcomers are about 1/8" from the floor (inside the cups). the downcomers are 5/8" higher than the plates. im not sure of the % of wash.Kentucky shinner wrote:How far from the floor of your plate is the down comer that sets inside the cup. maybe that is to close. Re: the penny whistle experiment
You could be throwing too much heat at it, once you have got the boiler up to temp you can back the heat off a bit, I will find that each plate will work at different times throughout the run. I only reflux for 20-30 minutes, all plates will bubble, but the bottom plate will be only slight. As the run progresses the plates will not all seem to be working, I can get to a stage where the top plate is bubbling like mad, the next plate down will not seem to be working but the plate below that will be bubbling, it's strange, and I can't give you any explaination for it, if you had bubble caps, all the plates would bubble regardless of whats on the plate, even just water. Its the final result that matters, getting the ABV and flavor.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
but in full reflux, shouldent all plates get full??? there was so much reflux, i was wandering where it all was going.
i cant understand it, on the vid that i posted, all of the plates would bubble and the botom would do the most.
thanks

Re: the penny whistle experiment
I was just having a look back through your build, you made the plates with snips like I did for the Magic flute, they may not be perfectly round. I just built a flute for Gretscham and I used Scottish boys method of mounting the plate in my drill press and useing a file on the side of the plate while it was turning in the press, I was able to get a perfect fit, where I must admit doing it by hand the plates in my Flute are not perfect. This could be the reason why Gretscham's Flute worked perfectly with every plate working, where my Flute will not work for the whole run.
This may not be the answer, I don't know, it's just one possibility.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
I think your onto something OD.. The flute I just finished for shady I had the plates turned on a lathe. Hell they all bubble so good at times the whole sight glass would be filled. I think what runs down the walls if the plate does not fit well kills the bubbling affect.
Re: the penny whistle experiment
what would the packing do??? create more surface area?rockchucker22 wrote:Ok to test I would use some packing on the top 2 plates and see if they stack. Easy test to see if you need smaller holes, or a tighter fit.
i thought about puting a 1/4" ring around the plates to make a "wall" around the outside edge.
i can only think that what everybodys been saying is true,,,,,maby my reflux is slipping past the plates via the inner wall of the column,,,, once it gets to the botom plate, there is so much "up force" from the boiler that it holds out on the bottom plate.

Re: the penny whistle experiment
well,,, you cant run a race with shoes that dont fit right,, so i guess that it would only make sence to have a good tight fitting plates for optimal praformance.olddog wrote:I was just having a look back through your build, you made the plates with snips like I did for the Magic flute, they may not be perfectly round. im going to try puting walls on my plates first,, if that dont work,,, im gonna need to hook up with someone who can do some for me. i can only make up so much B.S at work as to why i keep using the drill press and copper
