its a nice idea but it will be full of problems.

Typically you have a bigger distance between plates so that you do not get liquid droplets being blown up into the next chamber. I think 6 or 7" is recommended. Of course you could get around this by running slower - but that is not the idea.

Also you are going to be tight for space inside a 2" column. You can use external downcomers if you really want to.

So YES you could do it but it will be technically troublesome. If you want neutral dont bother - use a packed column instead.

For flavoured spirits as an alternative - yes why not - 1/2 the fun is fixing the dificult build issues. May not be any better than other designs but that is not the point, try it and see. :)

I experimented with a 2"plated column the Evil Twins, it worked well when I got to the final configeration, I did not use a dephlagmater on this build which would have made it better.http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 6#p6818076

Luv the mock up.

3-4 plates at the most IMO.
Could always strip, dilute and rerun for a proper nuetral.

Otherwise a packed column.....IMO.

What about 3 plates, *then* a packed column - best of both worlds then, and one doesn't have to build 10+ plates just to try the idea. Lot of action in those first three plates, and plenty of options for neutral or flavoured spirits.

Going up in size to say 3" or 4" could make the build a bit easier too. Just a thought because this will be my next project and it's been fermenting for a while... Nice mock up btw!

I like your train of thought Azeo. A plated column set up for an extension. Yank the extension for your whiskies and rums and of course with the extension for your vodka.

Pretty cool build you have going here.. This could be a great alternative to the bok column. very affordable to build also. I like the idea you have going here.
What size are the down comer tubes?

ya I think you may need to go up a little. If 3/8 will fit I think that would be your better choice. Just my opinion. looking good though man.

yeah, i thought that also, but enough to get the gears turning in my head. maybe don't even need any tube...look at some of the large scale commercial type rigs. downcomer and liquid retention sectors are not necessarily made with tube/pipe.

you right condesifacator, you could just have like a dam plate on one side with a spillway.

ta! yea thats' the idea! been kicking it around some time, done a few drawings, partly too because I haven't built a bubble cap yet and one gets the urge to try these things!
rockchucker22 wrote: Yea I built a 4" plated column and love it, This is just an experiment I'm kicking around. I'm going to do a short section I can mount onto my bok to see how it all works.

I'm just thinking small scale I don't know may or may not work well.
Looks like you've already got a good concept there! Go for it!
Looks too like reflux has plenty of opportunity for vapour contact on its' way through to the downcomer... It's certainly a bit of a "juggling" act to get it all happning inside a 2". As long as "choking" in the downcomer is avoided at the desired power levels, and similarly, the vapour path up has enough area (to avoid unwanted pressure rises/velocities), it should be ok.

Interesting how close a bubble cap looks to an inline separator - a couple of these (even just one?) could go on *top* of a packed column too (with a vapour/liquid trap for the bottom plate downcomer, and means to direct reflux at center of packing), needle valve draw off for LM.... hmm

rockchucker22 , an experiment is just that,,,, an experiment.. i say run with it and see what you get! who knows,, you might have the next "mouse trap"!
good luck! i like the way it looks, and the over all concept seems like a winner... KEEP US POSTED!!!!!

iv been looking at that for a while and i really dig it,,,, can you show some pics of the underside?????? id go 1/2" on the downcomers and drill your "downcomer holes"???? small to start with with. then if you aint getting enough "over flow " from the downcomers,, drill the hole bigger.. is this making sence????

see if this makes sense... you could build your plates like this and turn each one 180 degrees from the one above it. Just a thought that I have been kicking around for the flutes also.

KS, Doesn't a wall have to extend down to below the level of the lower plate's dam wall to keep vapor from rising around the plate?

To me if you are going to try a bubble plate in a 2" the space that is open at your dam is just going to allow your vapor to go there instead of through the bubble plate. Your vapor will be just like water and take the path of least resistance. I think you would need a down tube still if only say 3/8. I say kill the dam and use 3/8 as high as your dam height. Let it go all the way down to lower plate with no seal but will fill enough so it will stop vapor travel up your down tube but would allow it to drain when heat goes away. Remember I am a rookie at this but is my point of view and I thought I would share my thoughts.

something like this where the "dam" wall extends down to the liquid level...don't know if it would be any more efficient than tube downcomers..Image

Yes I believe this is correct... I was not thinking about vapor taking the easy way out but yes it will...
