Run in progress
Started with 3.5 gal. low wines from a molasses wash which i collected down to 10% leaving the low wines at 50%. Added 1/2 gal. of the original wash plus 2 cups or so of starchy from a boiled potato. I found that running my pot still at full go keeps me from smearing tails throughout the run. Anyway, these are my numbers so far:
Fores 150ml
#1 85% 800ml
#2 85% 800ml
#3 85%-82% 800ml
#4 82%-75% 800ml
#5 75%-65% 800ml
#6 65%-55% 800ml
#7 55%- 35% 800ml
Output slowed with that last jar. I will continue to collect in 800ml increments down to 20%.
EDIT *** Damn, posted in the wrong section ***

Can you sense the potato's influence yet?

Are you using packing? I found the same when I used a packed pot column.I found that running my pot still at full go keeps me from smearing tails throughout the run.

Apparently there is a mouthy feel that L_L describes as milky or perhaps creamy

Re: Run in progress
That's it, thought i'd give it a try. Problem is I don't have a test batch to compare it to. Finished the run with one last jar of 800ml collected down to 18%. Not sure what to set aside as heads, i'll air it out for a day or so before blending. I was not expecting to get over 2800ml at 80% or better. May set aside the first and last couple jars for a spiced rum. This is my first rum, any advice with the blending would be appreciated.LWTCS wrote:Apparently there is a mouthy feel that L_L describes as milky or perhaps creamy
Re: Run in progress
No packing, but the still does have an 18" column that I didn't insulate this run, so I'm sure I had a little reflux. Stayed in the 80's so long I thought something was wrong with my new parrot.blind drunk wrote:Are you using packing? I found the same when I used a packed pot column.

Re: Run in progress
Yeah, I just insulated mine and ran without packing on my last run. The keepers were all in the 55% range. Happy.

Which wash was that BD? The infected one?

Re: Run in progress
My thoughts after the run, this will be a pretty full flavored rum. None of the tails jars seem to be all that nasty, I might end up blending jars 2-7, but we'll see after a couple days airing out. I also have a bit of a cold which doesn't help.
Re: Run in progress
Give it a few days fer sure.
Early hearts turn late heads after some good airing on my bench.
Course I been rather spooked bout heads since 2009 thanksgiving feascoe

Thought that's how I read it too. But then I started getting confused and then had a panick attack.
Glad you brought it all back down whew. :)
Also remember a post from way back about some jasimine rice in the vapor path as well as Dunder's lil brandy short cut trick.
Tater juice in the spirit run did seem kinda stretchy though:):)

Re: Run in progress
From memory, Harry's GGGP's Rum recipe has potatoes in the wash.
Simple potstiller. Slow, single run.
(50 litre, propane heated pot still. Coil in bucket condenser - No thermometer, No carbon)
The Reading Lounge AND the Rules We Live By should be compulsory reading
Cumudgeon and loving it.
