Hi All,
I am an all-grain (beer) brewer but have always wanted to make a scotch or whiskey using grain instead of relying on essences.
I have access to a pure ultra still (reflux) and was wondering how i would go about using this as a 'pot still' by removing the metal scourer material from the column?
For an 18lt wash
Mash 4kg of BB ale malt at 65c with a eff of 80% should get a gravity of about 1053 and use a neutral yeast like wyeast 1056 to ferment out to about 1010.. should yield about 6% ABV.
Doing this would i be able to get some grain flavour into the spirit?

Re: Barley Mash using Ultra Pure Still
you're on the right track. remove all but the last pot scrubber from the column and let er rip. do your stripping run first. then distill again for heads, hearts, and tails.
good luck.
good luck.

Why keep the last scrubber?

Re: Barley Mash using Ultra Pure Still
I kept my last scrubber in the first time because it was jammed in too far and I couldn't remove it. The distillate seemed to be better on that run, than on subsequent runs with all of the scrubbers removed. Later, I reinstalled on scrubber and had the same results: better product for both the strip and the spirit.
