Neutral vodka and effect of more water

Post by Nightforce »

I'm preparing to run a DWWG run through the bok for a clean neutral spirit. I've got about 3 gallons of ~42% stripped DWWG and I'm wondering if it will be better to make another batch of wash, strip it and run with what I've got, or will diluting back to 10-15% with lots of water and running as a spirit run dilute the off flavors more and produce a much cleaner distillate?

I was also toying with the idea of doing a few more DWWG washes, stripping them out, combining with what I've got, strip again, then diluting back to <20% and running in the bok.

Not sure if that would be over kill tho.

Most stillers here dilute the strip to <40% abv and run from there... If you have 3Gal (12L) of low wines to run then that will certainly reach stilling temps faster than 6gallons... Apart from bringing the abv down to <40%, I can see no reason to go ahead and add copious amounts of H2O, Unless you have an element fitted...

I was also toying with the idea of doing a few more DWWG washes, stripping them out, combining with what I've got, strip again, then diluting back to <20% and running in the bok.

If you have a 50L keg then you could do a couple more stripping runs, charge the boiler with 30L - 35L of low wines @ <40abv and do a spirit run... Again I see no reason to dilute to <20% unless again you have an element to cover of-coarse...

Not sure if that would be over kill tho. Think you answered that one...
What type/size of boiler are you running..?

Run the Bok slow (pencil lead thickness) and you'll get +90% no problem...

Hope it helps... Have fun and stay safe man... :D

I wouldn't cut it down that far unless your worried about running the boiler dry, 40% or so will be fine for a spirit run.

The biggest effect more water will have is that it will take more power to run you rig.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm running a 15.5 gallon keg as a boiler and I have a 7.75 gallon ¼ keg that I can use for smaller batches. My bok is capable of 94-95% but I can't get down to pencil led thickness without it flooding. So far I've been happy with it, tuned fairly low I can get 94+% out of it at around 800-1200ml/hour. I found a source for some 2" copper at 2 year old prices, I think around $9 a foot, so I'm toying with the idea of going from a 42" column to around 60", that should help with the flooding (I hope) and push me over the 95% mark. For some reason my bok doesn't like to settle down with just under 40% washes, so next run I'm going to attempt ~30% wash and see if it runs smoother; it will settle very nicely with ~10% washes and hold steady until all the alcohol is gone. Gonna use a feints wash for that before I do my good stuff, plus, I want to do 2 more washes of DWWG and strip them and do a nice long spirit run. I'd like to stock up on few gallons of neutral for when the strawberries and blackberries come off this summer. :D
