Slow Fermenting Washes

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Slow Fermenting Washes

Post by Stilly »

I have been doing 2 sugar washes since I started this hobby several months ago. I have been using no more than 25% backset in the Sweetfeed and All bran recipes. I have not pushed the SG past 1.085. I aerate for a good while with a hand held electric blender. My water is tap water that is filtered. I have used a variety of yeast, dry bakers yeast, Crosby & Baker distiller yeast and also Crosby & Baker Super Start. Following the instructions on the board for these washes my first wash has finished in about 7 days heated to 80 degrees F with brew belts. The following washes with added backset are taking 2 weeks sometimes longer and are finishing at 1.010.

This seems a bit pokey to me, reading how others finish much faster. On a wash I started 2 days ago, it was very pokey and I for the first time added some Fermaid K and things are picking up a bit.

My idea for next generation is to try using some 5.2 stabilizer and see if that helps. I would like to continue using the backset in moderate amounts as I feel it helps the flavor of the final product!

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated!
Thank you
