Estrogen in plastic jugs?

Post by johnnydiamond »

I'm a first time brewer here making some apple jack with plastic jugs and I'm in the fermenting process, I was recently told by a friend that the plastic the jugs are made out of will increase my estrogen levels is this true because I don't wanna be growing jugs from drinking outta my jugs.

Preferably new and 2-5 gallons a little bigger is okay and I'm on the east coast.

From what i've read HDPE contains no plasticizers. This would be the plastic regular milk jugs are made of. They are considered safe.

If youd rather do away with plastics al together, I have used a 2.5 gallon stainless pot. It did bulge a little on the bottom. Probably got a layer of ice on top and the expansión of the liquid below as it froze had to go somewhere. After thawing the pot sprung back and looked fine. I'm guessing that breaking up any top layer during the early stages would avoid this also a thicker walled pot would probably not bulge either.

Also don't forget that you will need to thaw so you will need a metal pot or glass tray that is bigger than your freezing vessel to collect the drippings.

Unless you are worried enough about leeching to remove all food from your diet that is packaged in plastic, I would just ferment in plastic as is (otherwise buy a glass carboy from a HBS and bottle in empty beer bottles). I would guess that 99% of the food I have consumed since I was born was packaged in plastic and I'm still standing today jugless.
I ferment in plastic vessels as do a large majority of brewers and have done for years. Just keep the plastic away from any spirits and you'll be fine
