My Flute Plan

Post by mash rookie »

Here is what I am planning to build guys. Your thoughts are welcomed.

My flute will have a drop in tree using four KS pattern perf plates for neutral and a two plate tree for when I want to do whiskey.

I will build a drop in dephlag like OD’s new design and a graham condenser.

Temp probe will be above the dephlag

That is very similar to what I am building at the moment. The real difference is that I have replaced the Grahams with a 54mm shotgun condenser.

Pretty close to my build as well. I just took the overhead vapor straight out of the top cap and then did a u-bend into a shotgun condenser. You'll hate building it at times, but you'll love running it!

4 plates will not produce neutral.
Rock Chucker,
I was of the understanding that OD's two plate stumpy would produce 95 %. I have been told that four plates may be too much reflux for whiskey. Do you run a four plate rig? If you drive yours near total reflux with the dephlag how can it not be a neutral?

Ray Dean ,
I love your build. Beautiful work. I read your thread four times. How is she running? How are those valve plates working? These flutes have come a long way in a short time. I am damn excited. Been reading all the flute threads for a couple of months. My brain is swimming with all the info.

Yes, mine will be simular to yours. I wasnt ready to go to bubble caps, but love the drop in dephlag idea that OD is doing on his new design. Tell me more !!

BTW. I will have a suprise for you guys with the Graham condenser

I like this design, but this is a CM design right?

If you move the product take off port with vapor valve below the deflemator (which would then be called a reflux condensor), it would become a VM still - correct? I think I 'm starting to understand things a bit more now. Then instead of varying the amount of cooling water, one would vary the vapor valve to control the reflux ratio.

Like I said, I think I'm starting to wrap my brain around this - any additions, corrections, smart remarks are welcome to me starting to apply theory :)

Didn't think the Stumpy project did any more than 90-91%. I could be wrong.
But it is also possible to push tails into your 90s if you not paying attention..

I distill my rums (more often than not) in the 90s and I would not call em nuetral at all....

Maybe call it nuetral enough?

Strip, dilute to 40% and you should get a respectable vodka....

Point taken LWTCS. It seems that the Flute design is capable of carrying flavor through at a high ABV.

You get out what you put in. Your rum flavors still come through because you make a rum wash.

I hope to be able to get a great sour mash corn liker with my UJSSM and a flute. That is my biggest concern. Neutral (vodka) is lower on the list for me.

Doesn’t it make sense that if you use a clean wash like Birdwatchers and can run it 90 -95 % that you would get a clean neutral?

Very nice indeed-

Do I have my theory correct on VM vs CM design??
