Question about a fermenting drum

Post by gobbler777 »

a buddy of mine gave me a couple of 55 gal drums from a food plant he works at, the barrels are black and had chicken fat, and rosemary extract in them, i figured they would be just fine for a mash drum since they had food grade product in them, but the inside of the barrel has a teflon like orange coating on it. When i was cleaning the rest of the oil out of the barrels some of the (teflon or whatever the hell it is flaked off, i took 2 pictures of the inside of the drum and the label on the outside of the drum. Just seeing if you guys had any answers for me, or if im just thinkin to hard about it, or maybe i dont need to use them for mashin?

2nd picture in in next post

Wonder if the orange coating is what's making it food grade?

i guess my main concern is if the alcohol in my mash will eat away at that coating on the inside or would it even matter as long as the drum aint rusted up under it

yea after looking at a few a things i think that liner is a rust inhibitor, i guess its suffiecient enough for food oils and stuff like that, but i dont think i would feel comfortable fermentin in it, im just gonna use these for chicken feed, yall got any new websites thats runnin any good deals on some 30 gal and up fermentin drums

And the liner might not be designed for an alcohol wash

You’ll be fine using these as a fermentation vessel. These drum liners are food grade compatible between 2.5 & 12 PH as long as they don’t have any physical breeches. The stamp on the bottom is the DOT specifications.
