Re: Glenfiddich Single Malt 12yr
Never liked whisky before my first visit to Scotland and tasting my first single malt. Then I found why I didn't like whisky: all the ones I tasted before were blended.
My first love was Glengoyne. Not been beaten yet. Rather difficult to come by (most shops keep only big players like Glenfiddich), but at least now I can appreciate any single malt.

This is something I like
Have you tried any peaty malts yet?
Lagavulin 16 YO is a little more expensive but it's worth it. A little more oomph than the Glenfiddich.

Speaking of Peaty Malts, on the advise of the liquor store owner I bought a bottle of Laphroaig Quarter Cask. Wow, I guess I know what sucking on a chunk of peat is like Not my cup of tea, but I can see how others might like it. Me, I had to dilute it alot with water to drink it.

Laphroaig is too strong for my taste. Glenfiddich 12 yo reserve is pretty nice. Want to try the 15 yo Solera version.

Not all of the single-malts you see on the shelf in the local state store are created equally. Where as bourbon is, by and large, bourbon (saying that the maturation is done in single-use, charred, white oak barrels) an Islay Scotch is 100% different than a Highland, which is 100% different than a Speyside, etc. Terroir plays a huge part in Scotch whisky. If you've a decent bar near by (cigar bars tend to have a lot of scotch on the shelf) I would strongly recommend trying some of each to determine what you like before you go spending 40 bucks a bottle at the state store. Also, drink it neat.
Re: Glenfiddich Single Malt 12yr
The best single malt i have had was "Suntory Yamasaki". Although Glenlivet 21 and 25 y/o are nice too.

My money is spent on a lesser known but reasonably priced scotch called Aberlour. Fantastic. Giv'er a try. Bought a bottle 4 years back and never strayed since.

I am not at all an expert on whisky, but some who are recommend adding a very little water; they say it brings out the flavour.Brookspn wrote:Not all of the single-malts you see on the shelf in the local state store are created equally. You've got to do both. It makes two different drinks. The Baker wrote: I am not at all an expert on whisky, but some who are recommend adding a very little water; they say it brings out the flavour.
Having said that, I've been down on Scotch recently. Having been making my own whiskey, which I drink white, I have become very dissatisfied with how Scotch and Irish whisk(e)y is basically a flavoured spirit (oak, bourbon, sherry, caramel etc.), while insisting that it is pure and "authentic".
Add the political aspect that the populations amongst whom whisk(e)y was born are no longer allowed to legally make it, and even if they were, they could not market it as whisk(e)y in its original, white form, and I feel that the Scotch and Irish whisk(e)y industry is a big load of shit.
Brown, syrupy, cloying, perfumed and robotically consistent. Why is that what whiskey needs to be?

Which I will be using to build a fire on which I will burn miniature effigies of various political figures.
What did you think I was going to do with them?

I know you're only joking AV. I will admit to being a little crusty on the surface myself.

Yeah the movie itself is kind of humorous too
Although I do think single malt can call itself traditional even though it's cask matured. I mean it's been done like that almost since before USA was born.

I can't recall that far back, but send me some 200 year old whisky and it might refresh my memory
Re: Glenfiddich Single Malt 12yr
Tried some Glenlivet recently, and it is pretty nice.
Also tried some Appleton Estate rum, quite like that too.

Glenmorangie...number 1 selling single malt in Scotland for a reason. The Glenmorangie Nectar d' ord is one of the best. (pronunciation is glen-morn-gie. Like orange)

Ive been drinking Glenfiddich for about 20 years now and have to say my favorite two are the rich oak and caoran reserve, i have tried Glenmorangie as someone at work kept on about it, it was nice but not enough to turn me
