Small hole in boiler lid

Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.

Small hole in boiler lid

Post by Fluxeii »

Hello all.

After cutting the middle section of the handle off of the lid of my stockpot (to make room for the column connection) I was left with two protrusions sticking up. In an incredible act of physical dexterity I managed to step on the lid while it was upside down, resting on the handle. One of the protrusions took the brunt of the force and bent completely flat against the lid and the underside of the lid bent also, where the bottom of the weld was. After gently pushing it back to it's original position the piece came off completely and I was left with a small hole about 4mm by 5mm in size. Can I cover this with flour paste/PTFE tape/plug it with cork or must I have a patch welded onto it? Thank you in advance for your time.

you could use flour past o a cork,,better yet a SS bolt/nut or a rivet.

Stick a cork in it, if it leaks slap some flower past on it. You've got the right idea, as long as it's sealed your good to go. A bolt with some solder wold also work.

Oh and don't step on the lid. :P

edit Dunder beat me to it.

You are ware that it isn't mandatory to have the hole exactly in the center of the lid, right...??? You could have saved yourself some grief and perhaps even made running on a stove top easier by having an offset column mount...

Heh yes I'm aware, the issue is that the lid is only flat in the center and then slopes downwards until it reaches the rim. The flat portion isn't very large either, so it seemed like my only option. I did the vinegar/water run and there were no leaks using flour paste. I'll look in to a more permanent solution for the future.

Thanks for your time.
