Using Wine as a Wash

Post by maddyn99 »

Sorry if this has been asked, but I searched for Wine, wash and distilling wine and it wouldn't let me as those words are too common.

I just ordered the Essential Extractor PSII High Capacity from BrewHaus and I want to make Vodka. I have the recipe from here http://www.home-distilling.com/store/pc ... Recipe.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow

But I didnt order any of the yeast for it. In the mean time I also make my own wine and I have a batch of about 5 gallons of homemade wine that I dont care for and was wondering if I could distill it?

If so, what type of alcohol would it be like? I am assuming something along the lines of a neutral alcohol since its already alcohol product.

If i can use it, do I still need to make cuts?

Any advice would be helpful.

On a side note, do I NEED to use a vodka yeast or can I use a wine yeast instead?

Hi there, yes you can use it and providing that it has alcohol content, it should clean your still well. I don't think it will be worth drinking though. I ran 12 liters of Carlo Rossi for my cleaning run and it did the trick. I'm sure others will chime in on the yeat. Best of luck.

Generally distilled wine or a fruit ferment yields a Brandy. Quality of the brandy depends on what you distill. I am not sure it would be worth your while to distill wine if you want a neutral alcohol. If you have a wine you don’t like go ahead and run it. You never know. You might get some great tasting stuff. Nothing to loose there. .
Yes you will have to make cuts. Even more carefully. Wine has more methanol and congeners that will come through

Grain ferments yield whiskey. Typically grain and or sugar ferments are reflux distilled for a neutral or "Vodka”

If you do run it, don't expect it to be good for a while. I've got a few brandies that took a year or more to mellow and start to get good. Put at least a little away for a while and see what ya get. Some things that I couldn't stand when fresh have become incredible over time.

I've done red before and it has alot of undesirables, so conservative cuts would serve you well. Never done a white, though I'd like too. If I ever get any free time. Rare commodity these days

Thanks for all the answers. It is a white wine and I was going to toss it anyway so I have nothing to lose. I was going to do it last night but it took me longer to get the still put together and going than I thought it would.
