Looks interesting,,,but I'm not so sure I like this type of portrayal.
Hobby stillers are gonna git lumped into this kind of shenanigans I fear.

I thought the same when I saw it. Crazy hillbillies running shine. We need a show that shows the hobby distiller like the home brewer instead of the usual "it will make you go blind" crap you usually see.
Re: Moonshiners on Discovery Channel
We have LWTCS... But one word of warning... Dramamine...!!! Remember you need it before you need it, and you might need it if you're gonna watch all of LWTCS's videos in one go... LWTCS, put a camera stand on your Christmas list...HungoverHog wrote:I thought the same when I saw it. Crazy hillbillies running shine. Yeah, we'll have new member registrations galore after that show airs, even though it primarily looks like a compilation of segments from previous shows with a bit of new commentary... I can hardly wait...

Unfortunately that doesn't sell advertising. So it likely won't happen.

This was a quote used in a piece on alcohol distribution.Professor Lawrence Lessig wrote: speaking on NPR's "To the Best of Our Knowledge" about the impact of highly restrictive copyright laws in a digital age, "when the law reaches too far...it begins to erode society's respect for the law generally and it begins to breed a kind of corruption inside of society."
It went on to note : In speaking to the current state of copyright law, Lessig actually uses the experience of Prohibition to note, by analogy, that excessive, ill conceived and unsupported regulation of digital culture has led to a disrespect for laws in general, but also to massive corruption inside government.

just what we need, an entire series featuring for profit distillers with the focus on " are we getting good ratings" c.o.b.

Re: Moonshiners on Discovery Channel
Its double bad for us in the Appalachian mountains too. Last thing we need is more stigma about crazy rednecks. I mean sure its partially true if not completely depending on the person but the last thing we need is a bunch of people who think that country = hillbilly rednecks. and besides the only show allowed to make fun of Appalachian hillbillies is Squidbillies because its made in Georgia.
And the worst part is now all the tourists will be asking the locals where they can get some authentic moonshine at, it does get annoying ya know.

Re: Moonshiners on Discovery Channel
Most don't know there is a big difference between being Country, Redneck, and Hillbillys. But then again I could go on for days about what people don't know about things outside the little bubbles. It's kinda sad. If you ask me.

Having grown up in the West, and presently living in the South, I think it is safe to say that being Country, Redneck, or Hillbilly is not really regionally specific, nor defined by being rural or urban. Unfortunately, labels are often applied because it protects our narrow little bubbles, as PP has indicated.

Re: Moonshiners on Discovery Channel
Its definitely not region specific and limited to rural or urban people but you have to admit that the Appalachian South has a larger stigma than most for it. At least it seems that way down here. Of course even the most educated and civilized have to admit that sometimes it can be fun to play along with them. I thank God I can walk out my house and smell the pines, walk to the grill and smell the BBQ, and walk to the barn and smell the corn. Its good to be livin in North Carolina and livin free. Might go outside now and let the 12 guage rip just so I can wake the neighbors and give a REBEL YELL! Re: Moonshiners on Discovery Channel
To me its mostly about attitude.
A country boy would be a polite almost quiet yes sir yes mam farmer type. Listens to country music will share their stuff with just about anybody. will also help anyone that needs it. Big into community neighbors family friends very social with them. Active in local government. Seams educated and is in the ways they need to be. Not easy to provoke you have to hit them a few times with a stick. Poking don't do much. Drives a fairly new farm truck dirty well used but good overall appearance. Mite get washed for church?
A hillbilly is of course from the backwoods hills still polite in their own way may seam uneducated but knows more then you think skepticism towards outsiders especially guberment types. Doesn't like the guberment. He thinks they are after him but is quiet about it not so voicetriss about it. pretty protective of their things. Almost a loaner but if you mess with his neighbor or kin watch out. Will help others but not quick to offer. Bluegrass music with a little country. Not so easy to provoke take a few pokes of a stick. Drives a older pickup doesn't care what it looks like as long as it gets him from point a to point b.
Redneck This one is a little harder to explain. Arrogant look at my big truck flashy is social but not for the same reasons as a country boy acts like he is very educated but a lot of times just puts his foot in this mouth but don't tell him he's wrong. Some times rude and obnoxious ok a lot of the time.may either be from the city or from the country city rednecks being the worst. Thinks the government is oppressing him and will tell you all about it. Protective of his close family and friends all others he could care less of until he needs something from them. Help yeah right you got a couple bucks? Listens to more southern rock and country. Easily provoked no stick needed just add alcohol. Has a rebel flag in the back window of his flashy truck.
I think Being country or hillbilly is a way of life that they grow up with.
I think being Redneck is a choice of life.
My family was country I grew up in the city I moved to the hills and hung out with some hillbillys and I know a bunch of rednecks. We all have a little of all of them in us. Some are just more predominate then others.
Sory if I offended anyone with this post. These are just my opinions. Your mileage may vary.

I agree that it is worrisome that hobbyist distillers that never sell a drop, and are meticulous about the product they produce, may get lumped in with guys making 800 gallon batches of mash with dirty creek water. Not the same at all. I mainly lurk around here, keeping my eyes open and my mouth shut; learning everything I can from you fine folks. Hate to think of the influx of TV "educated" people muddying the waters here...

I just saw the preview for this. I'm not sure what to think... I"m curious to see how sensationalized they make distillers appear.

Re: Moonshiners on Discovery Channel
It was OK. I don't know what I expected. Its a typical discovery channel reality show. If you have seen any others then just change the subject and the characters and there you go.
I did notice that they were careful not to show them adding all the ingredients to the mash. I guess if he doesn't add all the ingredients on camera then he there is no proof he made a mash.

I DVR'd it so will watch it this morning, thanks for reminding me. Sounds like it might be my one and only in the series to watch!

I couldn't finish it. Taking your young son out to teach him the ropes and getting into a bully session (With shotguns) with what looked to be a 70 year old man was too much for me. Way to go Discovery. Ratings!!!! Not reality...

Jeez,
I said "wife beater tee shirts". I don't think these guys even own a tee shirt. Just a pair of overalls and a baseball cap.
This will set home distilling back about fifty years.
Bull.
