5 liters party keg aging?

Post by Digital_Plasma »

Hi guys,

I was just thinking this morning that I would like to make a whiskey run at some time. But a problem acurred to me because my storage capacity is limited when it comes to storing in wooden casks. They are quite expensive (like everything else here in DK!) But then I thought about pouring the whiskey in 5 liters party kegs and add oak chips or staves! What is your take on that idea? Would the keg take on the challenge? Also thought about using cork or wood to plug it up.

Sounds good as long as the kegs are stainless.

I have used these kegs before, but only for beer. I believe that they're made of steel. But what I was thinking is, what about the inside of the keg? Does it withstand the alcohol? The kegs are the same type as you can purchase in stores with beer. It withstands the beers alcohol content, but 40% or 50% abv is another story!

I guess I don't know what these party kegs are. I thought they were regular kegs, which are usually stainless and sometimes aluminum.

I think they ARE regular kegs. Party keg is just some stupid name i think is used here in Denmark to make it sound fancy. Well it doesen't does it? ;)

It looks like this:

That looks like a big can of beer. I get it now. Probably aluminum with some sort of plastic coating on the inside. If so, not suitable.

I think to recall that it was magnetic? I'll check it out as soon as i get home! But you might be right about the plastic coating! :( Thats why i wanted to hear if anybody had experience with using these kegs for this purpose....

It's probably some sort of epoxy. I don't think anybody here would advocate prolonged exposure of your drinking spirit to that.

You just need a big bottle with a neck wide enough to get an oak stick in. That's what I use anyway. :D

You're properly rigth jake_leg.... I think i might have a wine bottle that holds 3 liters and other like that. Normal neck though... I'll just have to cut the staves in thinner pieces.... Too bad. I would have liked the concept of having kegs of whisky lying on stock... The smallest wood casks i can find here i DK is 25 liters... A bit over-kill i should think. The price i somewhere i the area of 300-500 USD.... No smaller. Total bummer...

"Paul Masson" wine bottles have wide necks but are a bit small. Pickling jars are impossible to get the smell out. I use 4.5 litre demijons.

I found a 5 liter Demijohn jug. And at an fair price. I actually also found a 5 liters oakbarrel made of french oak. But the price was almost as high as that of an 25 liters barrel, so NO.... I think i have to settle with the Demijohn for now. If its good enough for you, its good enough for me! ;)

You can get them in Europe but they're really expensive.

I have one but just wondered if this would be practical as glass. It would hold quite a bit in one container. You just couldn't see the color with out opening it. Wonder how much wood would it take.

They have one big advantage over glass, I suppose - they don't break.

But if i had one I would probably want to fill it with beer.

I use three corny keys for low wine storage.
I store/age all my drinkable spirits in glass demijohns.
Current drinking stock goes into glass bottles with corks.

Works for me :-)

I am probably chiming in too late, but for future reference, it seems that small wooden barrels can be bought in germany at a reasonable rate (http://www.faesser-shop.de" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow). I use the bottles from a particular danish brand of choclate milk, called Cocio (only holds 0.75L, but they are cheap, have an open neck, and we drink chocolate milk any way).
