ideas for a non-electric pumping system

Post by ironpony »

Hey again folks,
Slowly getting together my setup, and now I'm at the "how are we gonna cool this thing" stage.
What I'm building is a boka with an appx. 10 gallon pot, and what I have is a LOT of space, relative privacy and limited well capacity. Along with the lots of space comes a limited distance I can run an extension cord, and I don't want to run a generator. What I was planning on was a gravity-fed system with two reservoir barrels, and dumping the hot water into the barrel not in use. I'm worried the bucket-dumping system will be a huge pain in the butt/inefficient.
I read the "water cooling system" thread but I had a hard time understanding the systems folks were describing, both because of being unfamiliar with some terminology and understanding diagrams better than descriptions.
So yeah, any particularly handy systems folks you've used that you could offer as inspiration? Hand or bike pumps? Weighted systems? Thermosiphoning? I'm open to doing something that uses fuel or batteries in the short term, but preferably low tech and not long term. Diagrams or pictures would be very helpful.

thanks yall,
iron pony

If you have a stream nearby you have either gravity feed or a pump.

A stream will pump water uphill by various means using the power of the stream.

Before you get too involved in the water side of things I recommend that you first look at your condenser. How much heat are you using and what sort of condenser do you need to build, based on the fact that it will be gravity fed. Work out the flow rates through various sizes of tube, and then have a look at the condenser calculator.

If the results indicate that a condenser build is practical, then look at what volume of water you will require for a run. Worry about how you will circulate it later, because you need an indication of what volume needs to be moved in what time period.

Nice project and one that I share an interest in.

I second the notion on a recirc pump. If the power cord is a problem, purchase a marine deep-cell battery and a power inverter to run the pump. Just gotta lug the battery back to your power supply for charging every now and again.

You could get a 12V sump pump. This too could be run off of a marine deep cycle battery without the added cost of a power inverter.

I have used a buch of systems to cool over the years and I have settled on this one because it is near fail safe. It works really well... the condensor sets up a gradient so you dont get huffing and the reservoir sets up a gradient to give your condenser the coolest water available. I reuse the water over and over again as it cools off with a few hours rest.
