Hello Everyone - Need suggestions

Post by brewbillybob »

Hello Everyone. I must say getting thru that anti bot question during registration had me quite stressed to say the least :) Just a sign of my intelligence level i guess :) I have been interested in distillation and building a small still ever since I got into wine making. There has all ways been a fascination to me with the whole process and science in distilling my own spirits. I have been researching it off and on for the last couple of years and quite intensely the last few months. I acquired a corny keg a few weeks ago and thought this would be the perfect time and the perfect solution to a small scale still. What I have done so far was cut a hole in the removable cap of the keg and fitted it with a 3/4 inch threaded nut and adapter. The hole was a little bit on the big size. Just a hair so I fitted it with a stainless steel washer on the bottom side and a rubber washer on the top and another SS washer on top of the rubber washer. You see anything wrong in using the rubber washer this way? I used 3/4 inch copper about 1 foot in length up to the elbow and then came down using 1/2 inch for the arm which I will attach to 1/4 in worm. Not sure how much length for the worm. I tried to use the calculator but not sure on a few things. What would you all think would be sufficient. I will be using ice and water to cool in a bucket. As you can see I did a pretty bad job on the solder on the cap but everything else came out good. I am gonna run a test run soon and repair any leaks as I see them and hopefully do a run this weekend. I have a 5 gallon batch of mash done and waiting. Please let me know if I am heading in the correct direction. Im really having trouble understanding the cut process but I know that will come. Oh and I cut the bottom off the keg and it is actually round at the bottom but I have and idea for that. Any ideas on a way I could use electric instead of gas for this setup without cutting holes in the tank. Initially I will be using propane.
Thanks for your time and appreciate your feedback.
