phpBB uses 'BBCodes' to mark up and beautify the posting (and PM's). Some of this is handled a little by the buttons on the posting page. So for example, you can select a word, click the 'B' button, and the editor will wrap your word in the [b] [/b] BBCode. That will cause that specific word to be highlighted. BBCodes have a starting marker, and an ending marker. A few have a few other things besides just the start and end, but that will be shown in the 'tutorial'.
Here is a helpful tutorial on how to use BBCodes, and what the BBCodes are:
http://area51.phpbb.com/phpBB/faq.php?mode=bbcode" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BBCode" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollow
NOTE, we have 'smart' URL's turned on, so if you simply type in the URL string itself, without the [url] [/url] BBCode, it will still put the 'links' there for you. There is a button in the 'options' of the post, which you can click so that URL's are not automatically parsed, but people will rarely need that. There is also a button to 'disable BBCode'. Almost never will people use that in there postings, even though I used that button here, so I can easily type my BBCode examples, without having them be 'used' by the phpBB scripts.
Hope this was helpful.
