Putting older posts here. Going to try to keep the novice forum pruned about 90 days work. The 'good' old stuff is going to be put into appropriate forums.
Had some fresh distillate at 92% sitting for 3 days in a glass Jug with a plastic top that I bought from the wine supply store, and the top broke off when i tried to loosen it. Is this normal or did i just get a defective Jug??
Is it ok to store distillate like this?
The glass shouldn't be effected by high ABV alcohol. I would say there was a defect or hidden damage to the glass. When you out some pressures on it. It snapped. If anything the alcohol would have made the cap fail. Not the glass.
I use those jugs to store low wines and feints. I have corks for most of mine.
If the alcohol vapors effected the plastic lid it could possibly have created enough mechanical pressure, not vapor pressure, to crack the glass... Think shrinkage...
Just as a warning. I just had a gallon jug blow out on me. Apparently I didn't have enough headroom. I don't remember filling these two jugs up that much. But the second one over flowed when I took the cap off to vent it. It got hot here in the house today. So I had to clean up a gallon of feints out of my closet.
