Running on a fire "furnace" old school info needed!
I watched the classic Popcorn Sutton documentary the other day on the DOC channel. It got me thinking about doing it old school. I have been looking around for some info on setting up the furnace (not sure if that is the correct name or not). It looks to be a trash can on its side for the fire box, but the rest I am not sure of. Just wondering if anyone can point me in the direction of how one would go about creating such a set up. Again, I am talking for the heating only, I got the still down!
To me, I assume the trash can has the back cut out to allow the smoke to move to the rear and up the pipe. I can't tell if the boiler is sitting directly in the fire, on top of the can with the fire in it or what.
Thanks for any advice or help in advance!

Try to locate a copy of "The Foxfire Book" (Vol.1). The chapter on moonshining has a good description and diagrams of a still furnace.

if you watch the end when he packs everything up, you can see that it is a trash can with the bottom cut out and it was sitting level with the boiler (you can tell from the sroch marks on the boiler) and he just made the heat/smoke wrap around the boiler with all the rock/mud and vented it upwards, since it had a vent the hot air would natually rise making a good flume for the hot air to wrap around the boiler and then out

Thanks Samohon. Must be one of the best documentaries out there. Complete, accurate, unbiased, and a valuable history lesson.

Thanks Braz and Poitin Paddy for this! I've skimmed and it already looks like a great read. The Faith Healing part at the end looks like a good laugh (I can't believe people believe that shit), but the rest looks really usefull.Poitín Paddy wrote:Quick Google search pulled up this link for anyone interested: http://www.outpost-of-freedom.com/libra ... reVol1.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;" rel="nofollowBraz wrote:Try to locate a copy of "The Foxfire Book" (Vol.1). I've been flicking through some of the designs from the firefox book and I've been wondering; how the sides of the old submarine stills were sealed water tight if they were made from ply wood with tin plate bottoms?

Between the boards they would put cloth and the water would swell it up. Go to history and folklore look for hamper mcbee video.
