My First Still....So I went Big!!!!

Many like to post about a first successful ferment (or first all grain mash), or first still built/bought or first good run of the still. Tell us about all of these great times here.
Pics are VERY welcome, we drool over pretty copper 8)

So, I'm curious and have been following this thread. Did you ever get "Stubby" fired up and running this past Monday?

Good deal man! Not sure about the Stern placemat.... :eh: your parrot setup is sweet. How warm is the distillate when it comes out into the jar? I may do a little coil setup of of the take off instead of a Liebig. I ran my mash this morning and collected about a gallon (US). My first real run, it was pretty exciting!

Awesome hendecp!!!! i just put 1/3 of my backset back in, and im adding sugar now!!!! i have had that book for years!!! i needed a little more space and when i opened the book box he was the first book!!!!!! my strip run filled up a 3 gallon carboy, that will be added to my gen2 run, so i only proofed the first jar. it was 138, but i did add a half gallon of 80% to the 12 gallon run. with my still short "potstill" The parrot runs hot, about 152 degees but runs 120-116 with the plate trees on it  alot more copper in between the boiler and the head  I also have a drain on the bottom of the parrot that i open at first to collect the foreshot, so i can pitch it!!!!

good job on you're run. an "always" have fun and be safe!!!

Pitch you forshot? Are you not supposed to save it and throw it back in with the next run. Hmmm, maybe with a high efficiency column that is not required.

Good deal man! I just started my first UJSSM, true to the nut, recipe today. I should be running it by Tuesday morning. Can't wait! This is addicting! Anyway. I am working on my parrot and your giving me some good ideas! I do however want to cool down the take off before the parrot as to get accurate readings on the fly with the parrot.

This sure is fun!

It sure is a blast!!!!! I was going to do a mod with my parrot to
Cool it!! But after a few runs I got the hang of using the hydrometer
As a baseline to help me with my cuts, Once I toss the fores
And start collecting, the first jar will be the highest ABV% so I
Write down that number, and little by little the number drops and the hydrometer
Rises higher and higher, after it drops about 50% from the starting number, and it starts to get the
Wet cardboard smell, I shut her down. Once you get you're fermenting
Down and you're still locked in, you're runs will be consistent with ABV% if you
Don't add any heads or tails to the run!! Then if you want to bump up the proof a bit, toss you're heads and tails in
In the boiler at the start of the run to bump up the ABV% up 20+% at jar #1!!!

Hey Backflush. Yep, you always pitch the foreshots but that's not much. The fores are the very first to come off and it has the bad stuff in it (methanol, acetone and other nasties). I always toss the first 300 ml (just over a cup) on a twenty gallon run(of wash not spirit!). The heads and tails is what you add back in or save for a spirit run.

PCH I finally saw your parrot drain in the vid you posted. That is a cool way to handle the fixxed parrot. Mine is loose so I just add it in. Its Saturday morn now so I will be adding it in in just a little while! Another batch of Rads all bran.....

Sorry backflush I didn't see you're post;( you don't want to
Add the foreshot to you're next batch!!!! You can save it and use
It as lighter fluid or cleaning solvent!!

Like always, have fun and be safe;)

I can say that it works great for stripping wood. Found that out the hard way yesterday! It took some paint right off of my workbench..... I might actually use the foreshot jar for stripping the finish off of some wood today.....

You sure did an awsome job using an offset head as a deflagmater and a product condensor for a flute design!!
I am reading your results and waiting to see how you like your results to see if I need to start looking for sight glasses and making a plate tree for my offset head setup. Just seems so simple the way you did it.

hello all!! Richard7 thats funny...ooopppss
hendecp, the run went great!! i put all of the 3 gallons of gen1, in the gen2 run. jar #1 started off around 70% ABV, i stop collecting when the vapor temp hits 200F, I collected another 3 gallons. I'm running as a pot still and will be saving up heads and tails for a jekell and hyde run!!! "my still with the plate tree"
Fastill!!! this setup works great!!! I am real happy with it. i only have 2 run with the plate tree, and i got some good numbers!!! i posted that run and some pixs.
one key thing i have learned, is not to try to run you're still to hot or too fast, in the past with some of my first runs, i would run my boiler real close to 200F the whole run. i found out this would make my heads and tails cloudy  Now what i do is get my boiler to temp "full power with my MK5500" when i get the first drip of foreshot i turn down my power to 12Amps and keep it there the whole run, this works great for me. now all of my runs are crystal clear  Distilling is not a race, I found out the hard way!!

Thanks all for the good words, and always have fun and be safe!!!!

So.... how was it? Worth the wait? I personally love the part where you take the hangover off first and throw that away! (unless you really over do it  !) I've got to give you credit for waiting. Is your UJSSM coming off with allot of flavor? Does the flute make it very neutral? I saw the numbers, but I am curious about the flavors of the different (Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde) ways that you run.

I hear ya on the never buy whiskey again  . Although I am going to have to make a trip up to Iowa on a plane soon and I don't think they will let me board with half of a gallon of my home made stuff  ! I am going to have to find something I can buy at the liquor store that takes the time to cut heads and tails, instead of continuous distillation and I'm sure that will cost me pretty penny. Anyone have any suggestions? PCH have you tried your apple pie? I just love that stuff but only in small amounts, It's way too sweet to just keep on drinking but it sure is good for dessert!
