Electric keg update

Post by WOT »

So after the initial hiccup with the power earlier this week the first run is done.

What a pleasure to run compared to running on propane. From start up to shut down was under 4hours. Heat up with 12 gallons was just over 30 minutes. Once it was up to temp the control over the boiler was almost as easy as changing the volume on your stereo.

I found the perfect temp was with the dial showing between 10-11. If I turned up the temp from there the output was a large stream and condenser had a hard time knocking down the vapour. Any lower and the temps dropped and the output stopped. What was really cool was being about to hold the temps just below where anything comes off and hold reflux as long as I wanted.I had the water running at just a trickle out of the reflux and the condenser so I only used about 25-30 gallons of cooling water in 4hours.

I have to say going electric was a very good choice. When I upgrade to a flute there is no doubt a 26 gallon boiler and electric controlled element is what I will be doing.

Congrats! I am on the same bus as Sam. Propane is a cheap way to get started, but far from ideal! A bigger boiler would be nice too.
