I've been smoking for what seems like forever. Started on a converted fridge I built about 12 or so years ago. When it wore out I put a couple hundred out on a charbroil smoker and wished I'd never done it. Its ok for some and it makes a fantastic grill but it can't do this,

Soon after using the charboil I built a new fridge smoker. Granted, my BBQ sessions do get a little heavy, but who doesn't like BBQ... :)

I mean C'mon, really... This is just too tight of fit. And the damn thing uses so much fue, but the Q is still good.

Yeah, I do like my BBQ...

Its a fine grill and it'll make a fine smoker with a few mods. I can show you whats needed to mod your charbroil chargriller into a top notch smoker. The explanation is quite long so I'll post this link.

I have made these mods to an extent and the charbroil worked quite well. As you can see though, I can't fit a big ole load of BBQ in the charbroil. I do have instructions to build a fridge smoker though if interested. Out of everything I've used to make Q the fridge seems to work best for me. It'll smoke over 100 lbs at a time.. :)

I'd love to see how to convert a fridge to a smoker...! I do a "fakey" smoke in my regular BBQ but I know it's like taking a shower in a raincoat. Don't know that I need to do that much at once but knowledge is power.
God you have me hankering for some burnt ends now damn you!!!

As one of the other posters said, with a few mods the char griller can be a respectable smoker giving you great results. This smoker is mostly for the back yarder but I have seen many of them at KCBS and Barbecue Bretherin events. I am a certified judge for both and can attest that I have had world class BBQ made on smokers just like that one. One mod not in the link that I posted was in another post was to move the chimney to the other side of the smoker and and extend it down to grill level. If you buy this smoker and add the tuning plates definatly move the chimney. The combination of the two mods creats what's called a cross flow or reverse flow smoker. Learn how to use it and you will be addicted to Barbecue.

As far as a smoker made from a fridge, just make sure it is basicley an antique with an all metal interior cabinet, for home use heat source is your choice for compitition must be wood or charcole fired. Take a look at the insulation and make sure it isn't flamable and won't melt, fiberglass is the best here. Just for the record, the teams that tend to win competitions with any regularity are using insulated smokers.

I have no experience with that one but I have been smoking food for years mainly fish. I use a small smoker chief (electric). I have built smokers and used others but have yet to beat my product with this smoker.

My thoughts, buy the BBQ you like best and then invest in a small smoker unless you do a lot of hunting and need something larger. I think Mash Rookie can attest to my smoked salmon. Also if you want a good recipe for smoked salmon search the HD site I posted mine about a year or so ago. :D

Im stayin at my cousins, goin to school for a couple mnths. He got a cheap wood smoker from crap tire awhile back. it works pretty good, kinda small tho.. i mean seriously, i live off beef jerky/pepperoni n smoked meats..
I need mass production.. well almost. But he makes some dang good snacks outta that thing! far better than what you'd buy in stores!

So anyways, i got the idea to google "meat smokers." We had nieghbours that made one outta a fridge. god my mouth waters at the memories! I thought, how hard could it be to make one??

its soo cheap and easy to make one. I'll never buy one.

Its kinda like buying a still vs makin one.. Although, with a meat smoker, its much simpler!!

seriously. if you can make a still, then You'll laugh at how easy it is to make a smoker!! :D
