ok i may be a bit simple here but what the f&^k is a "pigroaster stick"
i have been drinking both single malt n bourbon for many years but being in the uk bourbon was somewhat restricted to jd/jb/
and few others but i have recently i found "four roses" .....oh my ..... could this be the best thing ever to touch my lips
( wife excluded ) the depth of taste how light could it be.
this was a turning point for me i need to make a " real " bourbon now i have a bok with a interchangable pot head 40" column plus the head please help a simple man create a drink that maybe just a little like four roses .
the stuff i have is ok needs good oaking but i need a recipe to get me near to four roses please

oh and on the off chance has anyone found a recipe that tastes like greek metaxa ??

Here is an oak flavour / info pdf. Can't remember where I got it from. Have you thought of using English Oak?

metaxa and four roses are both tall orders, metaxa is a blend of brandy's made from 3 different raisins ,aged for at least 3 years in french oak then spices such as bay leaf, cinnamon, nutmeg and rose petals are added then aged more then filtered and bottled.
four roses is also a blend, using 10 different bourbons.waiting 3-20 years to see if you had the recipes right whould be a drag..and your not going to git the "nice smooth"flavor by aging with wood blocks in a jar.

Get yourself an oak planter from the garden center - £20. Make sure it is made from an ex whisky barrel.

They are usually American, French or English... Cut it up into ½" x ½" x 6" sticks then toast and char some of them...

Works a treat for me...

Hope it helps... :ewink:

Just saw this post. While four roses may be a tall order I'm heading down that path as well. Both four Roses and Angels Envy use a similar mash bill. I do notice that Angels Envy is filtered. While there are several different brands that four roses produces I notice that the barley % in the grain bills are usually 5%. This would lead me to believe that the Rye has to be malted. Either that or the distiller has to introduce enzymes.

I'm currently running several batches of a mash that resembles these grain bills. I'll be looking for a decent barrel supplier as I'll be using probably 3 barrels to complete the two different recipes I'll use for these bourbons. In time, we'll see whats produced.

just wanted to share a link to a German place (probably way too expensive, but at least my fellow Europeans will have the option). They also have barrels, that seem to be at a better price.
