sweet feed
I am using sweet feed for my mash and someone told me that the old fashioned way to make shine didn't have any sugar. Is this correct and if so how would I go about making it with sweet feed and no sugar?
Re: sweet feed
you cant the sweet in sweet feed is sugar or more correctly molasses.
the "old way" was to malt grain,,convert the grain then ferment. or
malt some grain,,cook some grain add both together, convert then ferment.
some did not cook the raw grain other than with hot water.this was inefficient thus came "sour mashing".
with most i like to use all malted grain or all that will malt.

Re: sweet feed
Will the sweet feed ferment without adding any more sugar if I cook it? What if I add more molasses?
Re: sweet feed
sweet feed will ferment or the sugar will .sugar is added to bring up the SG or the amount of alcohol it will produce. (many use sugar its cheep and easier than doing all grain) grain with out converting wont do much but add a bit of flavor.
the amount of sugar determines the amount of alcohol in wash so with out adding any you probably wont git much alcohol.
grain its self needs to be mashed to be fermented.with out, it will just sit there.(mashing makes sugar from the starch) this is a proses of cooking raw grain then converting with enzymes from malted grain.the right temperature are needed or the enzymes will not work efficiently or be deactivated.
so with "sweet feed" your stuck with a low percent of alcohol or add sugar, the sugar could come from molasses but then you mite as well make rum.
