Barrel Question - Newly Leaking

Post by DucatiGuy »

Question regarding leaking barrels.

I have two 20L barrels that have just begun to leak. One barrel is filled with UJSSM, and one with Rum. The UJSSM has been in the barrel for about 3 months now with no sign of leaking. The rum barrel I just filled on this past Sunday. Prior to filling the Rum barrel I had it filled with water for one week, I have the barrels stacked on top of each other as it seem the stands they are in fit well doing that.

Sunday evening I moved the filled barrels out to the shed, where they will experience big temperature fluctuations. Today while in the shed I noticed both barrels are leaking, not a huge amount but enough to feel the moisture on the outside of the barrel and there is a clear stain on the floor. Temp inside the shed today was quite warm, probably 120 degrees or so…night temp is probably in the 50’s.

I’m wondering about the leaking, the barrels have both been filled with no signs of leaking previously, do you think the high temp simply caused excessive absorption to the point of leaking? Or maybe the weight of stacking them is just too much? I don’t mind yielding my angles share, but sure don’t want to find I’ve leaked 5 gallons of good stuff over the next 6 months. Do you think the heat is just too much and I should move them to a bit cooler location?
Any insight or suggestions is appreciated.

Thanks,
j

That makes sense, do I ride it out and let it be, or best to move to a bit cooler location?
