Cellar

Post by AkCoyote »

Here's a pic of my "wine cellar". It's about 3' wider than the pic. I keep the stuff to age in the view you can see and the stuff to drink now on the right. The cellar stays 45-50F even if it's -30F outside.

Looks great AK. You may want to have an structural engineer have a look at it to see if it meets code. When you have that thing full there is going to be a lot of weight on it and if you thought the day you tossed your first still was a sad day, I hate to think of how you would feel if that thing dropped. Looks like you got a good size of stock going already AK. Nice to see.

Actually it's a lot stronger than it looks as each rack of bottles rests on the one below it. Come summer I'm going to put in a couple of shelves at a 45 angle going to the left just as extra support. This is all built into a rectangle frame which is securely anchored on all sides. I do agree however that tossing my first still wouldn't compare to this crashing down :( I guess I would have to break out a BIG straw.

Nice stockpile. That's what, 10-15 gallons of hooch?
Nice. I hope to get a stockpile someday, if I ever get my keg finished. My little one just gives me enough to barely get by.

Holy crap AK. Is that wine or booze? If its wine, power to ya, if its booze I'm so far behind its humbling to say the least. I do a run almost every weekend and it still seems like I can't get ahead. Is there an advantage to storing your bottles at an angle? Oh, I guess on second thought the bottles don't know the difference. :D

When using a cork you need to store the bottles on there side to keep the cork wet so it seals.

Ah, I see. But why would you build your shelves at an angle? To save space? To make it look better or maybe more organized. Just curious. I guess it really does'nt matter since its AKs cellar anyway. He knows alot more about what he's doing than I do.

Oh that is what you meant by storing your bottles at an angle Goofy. The reason he would stack his bottles like the is to keep them form rolling. If you have a shelf that is 3' long but only have 5 bottles on it then they would roll back and forth if they where bumped. The reason he has them at an angle is so that they remain solid no matter what and then he can stack them up and when he finally has a huge enough stock then AK will invite you and I over for a bender :D . At least that is my interpretation, lol

KH:
You're right on all counts :D Also, the weight of each shelf rests on the shelf below. Locks everything in nice and tight.

Goofy:
That's about 40% wine and 60% booze. I always have 5-10 gallons of wine fermenting. I take 3-5 bottles and let them age and the rest goes down the hatch. All I can say is, save a bottle or 2 from each run and eventually it begins to accumulate. I've also done some grain washes which are aging with oak in the bottles. Just takes time and patience

nice stock AK, that would make a hell of a party!, how do you take out the first bottle you put in there without having the rest falling down on you.

Well first, I keep all of my drinking stock on the right which isn't shown in the picture. What you see is meant to be there for a while to age. The way the bottles fit together, you can actually pull one from the middle of a 'row' and nothing will move. The system really does work quite well.
