"Three barrel aging" method

I heard or read something somewhere, which I cant find again, about aging whiskey in three barrels. Apparently one would start by filling your first barrel with "Virgin" spirit at 65% ABV. After a time when it has aged a bit/is a bit smoother, you would remove half (?) of the whiskey in the first barrel and add it to the second barrel. Then you fill the first one, containing some of the first batch, with new "virgin" whiskey and so on. I cant remember the rest and I cant find anything on it again.

What is the reasoning behind this method (if it exists)? Can you help or point me in the right direction? Is it worth pursuing or should I stick with one barrel?
