How did you get the wife's permission

Post by PGHRedneck »

So... i am having a difficult time getting permission to actually make anything at home. I built the still(s) at work and have it all there but have yet to ferment anything etc because I don't want to just show up at home with it all and let all hell break loose. She just thinks i am going to blow myself up. I keep telling her that i have done a lot more stupid stuff then this. You think i can just hide it all with the wine making stuff in the basement?

Maybe a master or two could post something about the safety of the stills you have built on the thread you started here : http://homedistiller.org/forum/viewtopi ... 50&t=35837

Far as I can tell, you know what you are doing...and your stills look safe to me. If they do, you could show her the thread and explain the process for as long as she is willing to listen. I subscribe to the happy wife - happy life concept here...good luck to ya.

I have a good agreement with my wife. I get one room to use as my office and she doesn't care what happens in it so long as she gets the rest of the house. Ohh, and she wants to be involved in flavoring/aging. Also have the stipulation that future homes with basements/garages become mine as well.

I just give mine a big ol' jug of vodka every couple weeks and she stays happy.

I started long before I even met my wife. She loves the smell of cooking corn especially when I add the barley or rye or wheat. I did give it up for about 9 or 10 years. Then a few years ago she told me get back into it. There's more to it than that, but that's the gist of it.

I am very lucky. So I'm told.

I'm lucky. My gal loves the hobby and wants to involved in the whole process of the hobby. She just made her first all grain bourbon and just bought her own bucket and started her own Ujsm. :D

I'm currently in the research phase and have not asked permission.

I figure its better to beg forgiveness than ask permission ;)

Unlike most guys, I do NOT have a garage to stash my stuff. And currently, all my other 'toys' has been exiled to 'downstairs' as she makes the main living floor 'acceptable' to the public. (Translation, all the boys stuff has been relegated to the part if the house not commonly seen by guests)

In her quest for 'rationalisation' of the house, downstairs looks like a bomb site and my stilling gear is mixed up with it.

I plan to holder fermenters in an unused bathroom, the only issue is the cooler temps. But unlike most people, cool is relative as I live in the subtropics. But the temp is a slight issue as it took forever for a cider I was fermenting to kick off and run its course

I saw the book "moonshine" by rawlings or whatever his name is and got it while I was getting books for the kids. (it caught my eye)
Then a month or so later I asked for Ian Smiley's book for my birthday. (which I got)
I built everything and fermented etc and since I had fermented beer and wine before she didn't really know what i was doing. I made ujsm and put it in whiskey bottles. Went to the inlaws and we drank it for about 3 month's, always drinking "gilby's" instead of the usual golden wedding we always got. It was different, but since i was supplying drinks, nobody said a word (her parents are freaking cheapskates)

One day I said "try this", and the wife said "ooh that's what you made? that's horrible"
i said you've been drinking it for 3 months now....

Well....she freaked...thought i was going to poison everybody...AND HER PARENTS DRANK IT????OMG!!!!!

That was 6 years or more ago and now she can't drink store bought. She asks for various things, brags to her friends, etc. Her parents drink it because it's free and haven't bought likker in probably 5 years or more.
We show up to play cards and we bring the likker, 7-up and sometimes junk food too!

friggen cheapskates....
Numerous 57L kegs, some propane, one 220v electric with stilldragon controller. Keggle for all-Grain, two pot still tops for whisky, a 3" reflux with deflag for vodka. Coming up, a 4" perf plate column. Life is short, make whisky and drag race!

Frick, what I wouldn't give for a 30X30. I get a 6x6 in the garage. But, god love the little lady...she gives me little Sh#T for my crazy ideas.

I know the risk of getting caught is slim and should remain so as long as we are careful. I still think it is important to have a real conversation with the lady regarding the implications. I was candid with her about every aspect. My wife has been with me attempting this 20years ago and she continues to support me as this has become a real hobby for me. I told her if she was ever uncomfortable about it I wouldn't hesitate -- I'd get rid of it all. Call me whipped...Family is too damn important to me to not let her have a say...when it comes to something like this.

My wife said , if I want her permission , it will cost me . First still , cost me remodel bathroom . Wanted to upgrade , and that cost me new hardwood floor in living room . Now just ordered a new still , Lord knows what she will think of this time . The way I see it , as long as she lets me do my thing , she can ask for and get whatever she wants .
